Maybe not illegal, but sleasy none the less. However, should have had the price worked out in advance of delivery. Lessons learned.

Ok, so the trade wasn't where you wanted it but you didn't mention if the price you weren't willing to pay was MSRP or over MSRP. I believe it matters because if you expected them to come off MSRP then people shouldn't be bashing the dealer.

The simple fact that you CAN get cars in the first batch at MSRP means discounts and supplier pricing are just around the corner.

Why is it so bad? He waited to do the deal. He's ok with the dealer wanting more. He can afford to wait. He's got a Corvette, at that, a recent model. The dealer did nothing wrong. Why blame the dealer, and for what are you blaming them?

My C7 finally arrived to my dealer last Saturday.
However..........the dealer decided they wanted more money for the car than I am willing to pay - so I shall wait for the market to cool down and buy a C7 next year when rebates and discounts will return to the marketplace.
I am driving a 2012 C6, so I am not exactly suffering. I'll wait, and hopefully any first year bugs will be gone by next year too.
I did not have a firm deal with the dealer in writing. They called me in July and took my order when they had an allocation slot. The understanding was that we would "hammer out the details" when the car was built. I cannot say that I blame them for wanting maximum price in this limited market. I say - let them make their profit when they can. No hard feelings.
I will continue to follow the forum and see how things are shaking out for everyone else.

In my case, I gave a $1000 refundable deposit in January when pricing and allocation were unknown to be #4 on a dealer's list. Then in July, when I got into the 2nd consensus and pricing was known, I gave another $4000 non-refundable deposit and we wrote up a formal buyer's order. Car was built 9/18 and I picked it up 9/30 for the agreed price.
Sounds like things were done a little too loose in your case, and there was never an actual agreement. Usually not a good thing in a transaction involving this much money.
Sorry it didn't work out. Hope you get a C7 when the terms are acceptable to you.

Always best to have a signed contract with price and both signatures.

I played with the Chevy web sight today and priced out my convertible. When I submitted my used C6 for a trade estimate my local dealer called within minutes. We talked, they will not have any allotments until after January. However there seems to be quite a number of potentially unsold cars. Well will see, maybe purchase from dealer stock?

OP, didn't you negotiate a price before you put down a deposit?

Finalist 2020 C7 of the Year -- Unmodified
I agree that they'll be discounting like they always do once the novelty wears off. That's why lot's of us in nice tricked out C6's are in no hurry to move over to a C7, as nice as they are. We're happy for those who are getting C7's now and will be joining them later on when the time is right.
