Default Owners pls tell us about the cylinder deactivation

How is it working for you? Do you like it? Can you tell when it kicks in?

If you look around at the owner reviews so far the vast majority have hardly noticed it turning on and off.

I drove 500 hwy miles the first day on my way home from NH to NY. I never felt a difference and never saw a symbol that the C7 went into ECO mode. I was varying my speed from 55 to 75 plus the whole trip.

Probably because you have the car is sport mode, I think.

I have 500 miles on my base 7-speed. Never tried ECO until today at around 65mph in 7th. Very hard to notice at steady speed unless you are paying attention. A slight change in vibration, almost like the type of pavement changed. If you step into the throttle slightly you feel it more but if you step in very much it goes to V8 mode.

In 7th gear with the base gearing 1000 rpm = 54 mph. Yet it has good throttle response at that speed in V8 mode! Amazing

Yes, we were told that in the Sport and Track setting it will never go into 4 cylinder mode.

It has to be in eco mode. Honestly, ive had it in both and I have been seeing better mpg in sport mode just tooling around. If I am on the highway at highway speeds it gets a little better, but sometimes the 4 cyl and less power works harder and needs more fuel. Oh well.

You can def feel it kick on and off. It feels like a fuel cut off. If you have ever driven any of the gm trucks with DOD its the same feeling. (2012 Silverado LTZ does the same thing)

In driving my automatic, it is very transparent and not even noticeable. I used the info settings that show V8 and V4 modes when they switch. They only way I knew was from looking at dash.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping the system was transparent. It sounds like it is not a problem so far. There was a lot of drama when we first heard about this feature.

Apparently, people make up a lot more drama than there is. The fact that Eco mode can easily be turned off makes it no drama.

the fact that auto people cannot turn it off at all, in all modes, makes it interesting to discuss...

George Vee was that 24.8 mpg average part of that highway trip and did you set it from zero?

One of the reasons to avoid the automatic is the AFM is to restrictive in the mode selector. It comes on in every mode except track. Had it in my Camaro and it sucked. With the manual it only comes on in Eco.

Active Fuel Management®
This system allows the engine to
operate on either all or half of its
cylinders, depending on the driving
conditions. With a manual
transmission, the system is only
active in Eco Mode. See Driver
Mode Control on page 9-38. With an
automatic transmission, the system
is not active in Manual Mode. See
Manual Mode on page 9-28.

Believe me, it's on, you also get a drone when it's on. To meet the EPA requirements, it has to be on all the time. The only way to defeat it is to shift to manual and use the paddles. After having it in my Camaro, I don't want anything to do with it. That is why I got the manual.

you get it, most of the guys here don't - it is terrible on my camaro as you know...there are three ways to get rid of it on a auto C7 at interstate speed:

1. get a tune and kill it altogether (but lose warranty)
2. get up to speed, shift to manual and paddle your way up to gear 6...
4. get a RANGE AFM module to kill it...I have one for my camaro and Adam says it will work on the C7 fine. ..I'll try it on my way home after I get the car.

Technically the AFM will also 'void' your warranty as you so put it, without offering quite the same benefits of a real tune. You're going to say, well the AFM can be removed before bringing it to the dealer, and I'll rebuttle with 'So can the tune, and many of them do not write the master log file so the dealer can't detect the ECM was rewritten'
