Default How does cylinder deactivation work?

I would like to know the mechanics/electronics of how the cylinders are deactivated. What makes them deactivate --- are the valves closed and the fuel cutoff -- is the spark stopped -- how are the valves kept closed? Lots of questions. Who can give a good explanation?
