C7 with Less Power than the Camaro
#81
I used to have a new Camaro SS with the 426 HP engine and compared to a Corvette it drank gas like it was free and didn't seem to have the performance of the Corvette.
Most of this was due to how heavy the Camaro was compared to the Corvette.
Corvette weight was about 3300 and the Camaro was about 3800 and the Camaro Covertible was close to 4200 lbs.

C5 was my last Vette,
the one thing the camaro has i needed was a back seat!Kids.lol
the car is heavy and traction is non existent.but the fun factor is off the charts.I'm sure this post will be berated but its just whats up right now.

Some people think a car is defined by its horsepower rating. IMO they have a very short view of what makes up a performance car. It is ok to dream about having "more" then the other guy but there are a heck of a lot more things that make up a fast car.

Yes. There is muscle cars and sport cars. Mustang is clearly a muscle car and corvette a sports car. Even miata with 120 HP is more of a sports car than any mustang.

As far as the Camaro having more HP. The current Camaro has been in production for a few years and has it's higher end models in place. Even the base SS is powered by the the same LS3 in the Vettes. If they put the LS7 in a "Z/28" or whatever they'll call it, It'll be just another option package for the Camaro. The C7 will start out with base package, and 450+ hp in a direct injection motor will be no slouch in the Corvette chassis. As they develop the LTx Gen V engine, we'll see more options. They are already developing the LT4 for future installments of the Corvette. The LS7 and the LS9 will be outdated technology in no time.

I spoke to a GM marketing Exec a few years back when the Camaro first came out. This is what he told me about the new GM and its motors. The Corvette is NO LONGER a sacred Cow for HP. Expect to see the Corvette engine is almost any brand GM makes and the Corvette will no longer have a HP edge of another GM product.

The desperation at Ford has to be mounting on a daily basis.
They have been pouring BIG money into Rustang for the last 5 years with a number of new engines, retro models, totally different bodies, suspensions, trannys, brakes, etc. Yet their top GT 500 (Shelby engineered, not Ford) still can't convince the auto press or the buying public that it is better than the (GM designed and engineered) Camaro, only that it has more hp. Big deal.

Unfortunately, not too many people seem to get this basic fact. You can have 1500Hp but if the car weighs 8 tons, it doesn't mean anything...
