For a 1 year run I would MUCH prefer the current 6L80 over a one year introduction of a very different transmission. I was planning on a second year Corvette anyway but if I were on the fence this would have been enough to change my mind. I have no problem with the Aisin transmission but I wouldn't want a unique and major powertrain component that is only going to be used for a single year.
I wonder how the shift speed of the Aisin will compare to the later production 6L80 with the updated software? It would be sad if the next generation was introduced with transmission responsiveness similar to the early production 6L80.

There's good, and there's bad from every brand and company. Getrag's either Chinese or Japanese built transmission in the turbo supra's have been taking double stock hp abuse for 2 decades now. The getrag in the new mustang... not such a good reputation.
Nothing matters until these cars hit the road and are beat on to see.

That ought to make things interesting for the NCRS about 25 years from now when there are potentially two trannys in the first two years, especially if there are warranty or other issues and they get swapped. I'll stay with my manual...

This does not bode well for the new Corvette. If they admit they can't get it together for the launch without buying a stopgap transmission, what else is unfinished business?
**** poor performance. The GM transmission better be a worldbeater when it does show up.
By the way, just who the hell is responsible for this debacle?

Seems to me that it is much more likely that GM would use the existing 6 speed automatic until the 8 is ready. The ATS was expected to have an 8 speed auto, but debuted with the 6 since the 8 wasn't ready. Plus, with the "staged upshifting" on the Camaro ZL1 and 2013 Corvettes, the 6 speed up-shifts are much improved and comparable to DCTs.
MotorTred also said 5.5L, just sayin'.
Well if they are not launching the 8 speed because they do not feel it is up to production Corvette standards, it would imply that they are only willing to launch components they feel are ready for prime time. This would imply to me that the rest of the car passed this more strict (as compared to "old" GM) criteria, and that GM is committed to ensuring they do not launch any "half baked" products.

Sounds like you're a spokesman for GM. Seriously this is not a good start for the most anticipated car launch for any car company in a very long time.
