New engine designation.

New engine designation.
Will it still be an "LS"?
All the LS numbers are getting used up...
LS1 C5
LS2 C6
LS3 '08 C6
LS6 C5 Z06
LS7 C6 Z06
LS9 C6 ZR1
So LS4 for the base C7, LS5 for the mid-cycle update,
LS8 for the C7 Z06?
That uses them all up!
What's next?
Go back to the LT's?

The LT1 came from the LT-1 of old; the LS1 came from the LS4/5/6 of old; perusing Wikipedia I don't see any other obvious "famous" engine codes that make a good jumping off point. Perhaps someone more steeped in old Chevy smallblock lore can point out something good.

As stated, both lsX and ltX were designations of old. Possibly lrX if they just decide to go backward?
The lsX they skipped some numbers to leave room for future products(like ls4 which was indeed used in fwd impala, grand prix, and Monte Carlo). Now with designations filled up almost, and the new motors being a ground up redesign I see no chance of anymore ls designations as they won't be ls motors.

Only LS5 and LS8 remain (if they're going to stick with the 'three digit' designation that is) and I do think that they'll get used.
I don't see any reason why they wouldn't branch out into the 'four digit' realm in an attempt to differentiate the new from the old either so maybe we'll see an LS10, LS11 etc as well.

Some have surmised they may go back to an "LT" designation.

That's possible as well. But I would think that they might even explore the possibility of an entirely new nomenclature/designation/prefix letter or letters, to really separate the past from the present and maybe give the 'feel' of an entirely new, clean sheet design (even if it actually isn't one).
LC1? LC7?
Perhaps going back even deeper into the '60s?
L79? L88?
Not likely, but anything is possible.

Before the LS and LT series they just used "Lxx" (L98, etc.) ... they could always go back to that.

Hmm, then my guess is that they won't use LS5 and LS8 as those are the only two numbers left (that weren't used recently) and they will likely need more than just two engine designations (base C7, maybe a Z06 and a ZR1, future Cadillac and Camaro engines etc.) for the Gen V in the future.
I'm really giving new thought to this LC series designation, LC1, LC7, LC9 etc.
Or maybe LM1, LM7...?

I like the sound of that.
Who actually decides this?
I would think most RPOs are computer generated, but there has to be people in GM that get paid to think about the "special" ones.
Some are cool... Z06, Z28, ZL1, ZR1.
Some, like the "track version" of the Camaro, not so much.
1LE?

I do wonder, though, what they're saving Z28 for... or do they consider it tainted by mullets?

Would be good to see those again. And they have a demonstrated history of being comfortable repeating the designations. They repeated LT1, LS3, LS4, LS6, LS7 - so they did so in both LT and LS series. Why not a L79 and L88?
They also seem to have an affinity to the letter Z in the RPO codes.
Perhaps we'll see an LZ1 (or pivoting off the LSX series with an LX1).
I still like your suggestion of L79 and L88; those would be cool for the new base and higher performance version.

1LE is supposed to appeal to track rats and GM nerds --
