Trade or sell outright
I need some help with a asking/ trade in price for my Z51 coupe. Silver/gray, 7spd, 2lt, dual roofs, mag ride, prof Ext., nav, tint, 1200 miles. Never wet, perfect condition.
I want to move over to a convertible. None of the normal web sites ( nada, Edmunds, kbb )shows a listing for 2014 Stingrays yet.
I will be hard pressed to do it if I get killed on its current value.
thanks o lot

You don't pay tax on the trade value, so that could potentially save you thousands. Even if the dealer's offer is a little low, it could wind up being a better deal than an outright sale.

"Lose money driving off the lot" simply is not true (yet) on these cars.
Another angle is find a buyer and trade in car on paper to new car dealer and have them sell it to new owner. would also be easy to find a dealer to do that.
Certainly if you bought your car at old MSRP before increase you have money in the bank.

I received some really good info and think the dealer will allow $65k for the trade. I am going to run a ad for $67k and it will be a wash because of the sales tax.
Again, thanks for all the imput here and private messages.

Yep, now is the time to get rid of it, without taking much of a hit. This happens every time a new vette comes out. 6 months from now, the whole picture should change, as the 2014's will be last year's model and the novelty has worn off somewhat. This time around however, it may take a little longer for things to settle down, due to the striking new look of the C7, coupled with the major interior upgrade and mechanical refinements. All to the good.

Make the sale of your old C7 contigent on doing an in-out if this is legal where you live. Here in TX you can do an in-out where the dealer buys your car and then sells it to your private buyer for the same price right then. This gives you the sales tax credit AND the higher private party sales price.
PS. Are you certain your sales tax in 65K is only $2K? cause here it'd be over $4K in saved sales tax.
Good Luck!

I was basing the tax on the differences between trade and selling. I am very impressed with this car and not obsessed with changing over to a convert. I would have to ordered the new one and it would be configured just like the coupe.
So if someone thinks it worth $67k or the dealer is willing to go $65 as a trade, I will do the switch. Not sure about the "in and out" here in the redneck Rivera ( northwest Florida but will check, thanks.

This car would bring MSRP at auction, if you save tax $ you should be able to trade for very little over actual MSRP difference.

I know about losing money on new cars as this one is my 61st. The worst was a new Mustang Mach1, Paid $29k and traded 8 months later for $21k. The best was a used 72 VW Thing, paid $3k and sold for $6k with just a little TLC.
I guesstimate I am in the hole over $100k but it was worth all that fun.

I'd be very surprised if you find any dealer to even give you mrsp. I'd expect about $5k less than you paid. Dealers are still in business to make money at every possible angle. Good luck and keep us posted!

You need to do a in and out with the dealer your buying your new one from, that way you still get the tax savings
