Default No Carbonfiber Hood....Did I miss this

I remember hearing all the talk about the fenders and hood using CF, but now appears to be the front fenders and front wheel tubs and floor pans only. Just curious if this all plays into a 50/50 balance so the rear quarters as well as hood did not need the weight reduction. What are your thoughts.

I can guess two reasons:

PITA to paint
The hood is small the weight savings was not worth it.

The hood would actually be a larger area that could save a lot of weight. I could possibly see the cost being to high compaired to the weight savings. maybe they will offer it on the BD.

I had a aluminum hood on my S2000 that was actually lighter then the after market carbon fiber hood.

The Z-16 carbon fiber hood from last year saved a whopping 10 pounds. A number of Z06 owners I've seen could easily loose more if they quit eating Big Macs.

Or Mcribs, like I just had......

In someone's "truth" thread (it was Rick's thread titled time to dispell rumors) the carbon fiber hood was definately listed but as of late I haven't been hearing about it. I wonder.....

I thought it was mentioned that the hood is still carbon fiber and the fenders and wheel well liners are now added CF components along with the outter skins on the floor sandwich....Maybe I missed something.

Might even see all carbon fiber( except noise and rear) but consumers might not like the way carbon fiber holds the paint. Carbon fiber is not hard to paint just that you can see the C/F though the paint. Most conumers dont like that.

There is a company making the Z06 carbon fiber body panels for the World Challange C6 ZO6 Corvettes which will debuit along with the C6R at ALMS race at Sebring in March.

GM already provided reasons for using carbon fiber in the fenders rather than the hood:

That's why the Z16 cars used unidirectional carbon fiber. You can't see it through the paint, but it's weaker and heavier than woven.

Is that the same as the Carrera GT and MB SLR?

Those cars exterior finish looks excellent.......

yep; all the "hoopla" over the Z-16 CF hood, and it only saved 10 lbs.

There is a post in this forum listing the 2006 Z06 CF hood as minus 10lbs. Are you guys thinking there is not a CF hood on the new Z06?

I would assume so. But don't take that as gospel.

However, the finish on the Enzo sucks and it does use the woven carbon fiber. So if the Carrera GT and SLR have a good finish, then they probably used unidirectional fibers. (Or possibly heavier coats of paint???)

Just playing with numbers:

currently the Z06 is at 3130
- 10 pounds for CF hood

3120

lets say - 15 for Titatnium exhausts

your at 3105 !

Should mabey be options.

Then you just need 100 so more pounds to get under the holy grail of 3000.

Non runflats, + use plexi based rear glass, with hardeners on the surface for scratch resistance, + CF rear quarters?

getting close to 299x

3rd reason may be the need to bond the Z16 hood to the SMC under structure to provide rigidity.

The Z16 hoods are very light AND very flimsy. The SMC hood on my 01 was a great deal more stucturally rigid. The Z16 hood twists so much that it's a bear to close.
