In today's dollars the ZR1 would be $103k
Assuming the Jan '90 127.5 CPI and today's 191.2 number, a $69k ZR1 would cost $103,473. And few will argue that even adjusted for improvements in technology this ZO6 will be a much more aggressive project.
There are many more fixed production and tooling costs to be spread over fewer units than the base car, and it will use many expensive materials too. It costs GM money too.
In other words, QUIT YOUR BITCHIN'

You are right. The ZR1 was WAY WAY WAY overpriced. Look at it now.
Its about as useful as a 96 Cobra Mustang. For that reason, people should be skeptical about paying high for GM's newest car.

I am really starting to like all these comparisons to the ZR-1, because, as most of us know, the ZR-1 was a failure and the new Z06 could easily do the same....Price is everything and much beyond low 60K range will probably allow it to die a nice, quiet death.

I,m glad to see the new Zo6 will be aggressive and a large step up from the base model. Cars are not investments , but made to drive and enjoy no matter the cost.
My Zr1 was light years ahead of its time and I still enjoy driving it today ...As for the 96 mustang I had one for lunch last week
ITS HELL GETTING OLD

And here we are again with a sliding dollar and sitting on the edge of inflation rising again. Its going to be interesting. Personally I think the new Z06 is going to be incredible and they will sell every one they can make the first couple years. Thanks GM for doing it again. Just sorry that you couldn't have done this back in 98-2000. The word "brisk" would not even come close to describing sales of a car like this then.
HP: As we all suspect I believe there is a bunch more horsepower in the car that what they are advertising. Simple bench racer math of 1.3hp per cubic inch gives you 555 hp . I suspect that GM has done the typical thing of tuning these pig rich for warranty purposes and that with a couple simple mods you are going to see larger numbers than 500hp. Again great car. As for the comparisons against the ZR1, I think there is a new sheriff in town and its going to give even the heavily modifed zr1s a real run for their money on the drag strip. I for one can hardly wait to see one that has been tweaked and tuned run with a 415 car.
Wheels and tires: 19x12's! 345!
Let's all enjoy the fact that GM even committed to doing this again. Those amoung us familiar with the politics inside GM of from past projects like the ZR1 know for a fact how many times projects like this may have come close to an early death. Way to go Dave Hill to his team! Thanks for fighting for this and even building it in the first place.
Merry christmas everyone.

I love my ZR-1 and would not trade it for a Z06 but I would love to have one..Plus its hard to compare a 10 to 15 year old model with new technology and just the fact that people try to makes the ZR-1 a king in its own right.

Kev, not a slam on the cobra mustang, but I was questioning the comparison of the cobra to a ZR-1.

I have spoken to a dealer that sold a 1990 for a high of $115,000.00 in 1990... This may have limited the sales of future cars, The owner OF MY 91 said he paid 3,000.00 more than sticker. Hopefuly the dealers dont get caried away with the new ZO6.
I see dealers marking up the new mustangs even 6 cyl cars by 2 0r 3 thousands.
The new ZO6 will be another legend! for us all to enjoy.
