Default Attn: Vendors. Time to finish up the Z06 weight.

It would be nice if the aftermarket vendors could finish up where GM left off with the weight savings. I suppose GM had to draw the line chiefly at cost, but maybe also at fit/finish/durability, etc. The Z06 still needs:

1) A Lexan hatch. We don't care about scratches - we won't be very worried about what's behind us. As long as it doesn't blow off at 200 mph, it'll be OK.

2) Ceramic rotors. We don't care if they squeak or make mountains of dust. Hell, we've lived with obnoxious 2002-2004 Z06 brakes for years now.

3) Titanium cats-back exhaust with no flapper valve gizmos. Or maybe aluminum. Arizona Speed and Marine used to make aluminum exhaust for C4s. No durability, but it was light.

These three should:

1) Decrease overall weight by 100 lbs or more.

2) Decrease unsprung weight.

3) Decrease rotating mass.

4) Maybe lower center of gravity (not sure).

Can the aftermarket manage to get these items to market at a price that won't blow us away?

I am with you and think we should target getting the new C6 Z06 under 3000 lbs.

4. Switching to non run flat tires should also shed quite a few pounds.

5. Switch to aftermarket forged wheels. Not sure the weight of the factory wheels yet, but usually there are aftermarket wheels that offer substantial weight savings.

6. Switch exhaust manifolds to headers. On the C5's and C6's the headers usually saved about 25-30 lbs. Not sure what they will save on the C6 Z06 yet.

The cheapest CCM, carbon ceramic matrix, rotor out there today is $4,000 EACH!

CCM's dust very little actually.

BTW- Motiv used to make CCM rotors for whatever car you wanted, at a price. Not sure if they still do.

7. Switch to a set of Sparco race seats...HUGE weight savings!

8. Add a roll bar and gain it all back.

Looks like it won't have cast iron manifolds

QUOTE "hydroformed four-into-one tubular headers carry the exhaust from the heads, after which it's routed into a model-unique set of catalytic converters and dual-mode mufflers. The latter include a vacuum-operated valve that stays closed at low revs to manage noise and opens at larger throttle angles for minimum backpressure." END QUOTE

Corsa did a Ti cat-back for the GEN5 car, wonder if they will do one for the GEN6 cars?
