By the way, I forgot to say that those are all from General Motors.

It would be an interesting question to investigate how many patents (or
even applications) the various transmission houses have that
apply to 5-, 6-, 7-, and 8-speed automatic transmissions. While
I am not going to attempt this, it is difficult to believe that anyone
is even close to GM on the 6- and 7-speed ATs. I suspect that
their considerable investment here will look like a very wise decision
in a decade or two. I also bet that in a decade, the four-speed ATs
will be museum pieces.

Yes, that's currently called the X22F. You can search Google or Kartoo
for it. Just type in (without the first quotes) "X22F GM Ford" or
" "6-speed automatic" Ford GM"
http://www.google.com/
http://www.kartoo.com/

Here are a few links. The X22F is a front wheel application. The X13R, X14R, X15R,
and X16R or the rear drive ones that have the potential to make into C6 at some
point. There was a recent mention of the 6L80-E on a Buick showcar putting out
400/400 (HP/Torque).

Antifoam compositions for automatic transmission fluids contain antifoam agents
comprising perfluoropolyether compounds (PFPE). An automatic transmission fluid
is provided containing the antifoam composition in a lubricating base oil, along
with conventional additives such as antiwear agents. Automobile transmissions are
provided that contain an automatic transmission fluid containing the new antifoam
compositions. In a further embodiment, methods are provided for reducing unwanted

20040094364 Lubrication system for high speed planet gears

A lubrication system is provided for a planetary gear train. The system includes
an oil supply that disperses oil to a thrust bearing. The thrust bearing purges
the oil radially outward. A strategically placed molded cavity collects and
channels the oil from the thrust bearing into the planet bearings. Features in
a planet gear carrier and a planet gear face washer can form the oil flow path.
The washer can have a further feature for expelling the oil after the planet
bearings are lubricated. By using the planet gear end face washer, this
arrangement allows for the cavity to be cast rather than machined to thereby
reduce the cost of increasing the flow of oil into the planet bearings.

While it is interesting that GM has so many patents on these higher number gear transmissions, it is funny that BMW has 6 speed autos on the market and Mercedes Benz has 7 speed autos on the market.

Piston cooling oil system with windage tray

Abstract

In a preferred embodiment, a windage tray assembly is mounted to crankshaft
bearing caps which connect with oil passages in the windage tray. The passages
carry the oil through nozzles directed toward the interior of associated
pistons. The arrangement utilizes the windage tray and bearing caps as carriers
for piston cooling oil obtained from the bearing caps, which are already supplied
with oil for lubricating the bearings. Thus, modifications of an engine design
to install a piston cooling system are limited to redesign of the windage tray
to a sandwich-like assembly and modification of the bearing caps to conduct oil
from the bearings to the windage tray passages. To limit oil pumping energy,
oil distribution holes in the bearing caps connect intermittently with crankshaft
journal feed passages so the oil is distributed in individually timed streams
or sprays directed toward the pistons for a short interval once every revolution
of the engine crankshaft.

Carbon fiber-reinforced composite material and method of making

Abstract

A method of making a composite article of a graphite-filled polymer mixture
that is robust during high shear mixing and compounding, and that exhibits
relatively low electrical resistivity after molding. The mixture is formed
by shear mixing a liquid polymeric material, graphitized carbon fibers having
diameters of less than one micrometer, and glass fibers longer than the carbon
fibers. The carbon and glass fibers constitute up to about 25 volume percent
and up to about 50 weight percent, respectively, of the mixture, though the
addition of as little as about 1 weight percent of the glass fibers has been
shown to dramatically reduce resistivity. The mixture is then introduced into
a mold so that the glass fibers are substantially oriented parallel to the
direction of flow. Due at least in part to the glass fibers being larger than
the carbon fibers, the carbon fibers are substantially aligned with the glass
fibers and preferentially segregate to regions of the polymeric matrix near
interfaces between the polymeric matrix and the glass fibers.

That last carbon fiber one seemed interesting. Maybe I misread, but it seems that adding glass fiber lowers the electrical resistance of the carbon fiber matrix. Why would they want that? is that so it can act act a ground path? Does it have some benefit to reducing electromagnetic interference?

Who has a plain english explanation of why we want this?

Thanks!

Plain english is tough to come by in patents. You might try reading the
"background" and "brief summary" of the invention here. "Electrical conductivity
is a necessary property for applications such as charge dissipation, electrostatic
painting, radio frequency interference and fuel cell plates.

Thanks! Close enogh to plain english for me. It appears that the reoccuring theme is that it allows electrostatic painting processes. If I recall correctly that process is used on the current Corvette. Perhaps that will help with some of the finish problems they were having with Carbon Fiber hoods.

Electronic clutch-to-clutch transmission control system

Abstract

A transmission system includes a first clutch, a second clutch, and a controller.
The controller communicates with the first and second clutches and commands a
gear shift. The controller calculates a torque phase time for the gear shift and
determines a desired torque trajectory within said torque phase time. The controller
determines on-coming torque values for the second clutch and off-going torque values
for the first clutch to achieve the desired torque trajectory within the torque
phase time. The controller calculates an on-coming clutch pressure based on the
on-coming torque value, and an off-going clutch pressure based on the off-going
torque value. The controller delays actuation of the first and second clutches to
compensate for hydraulic delays.
