New Battleship Class Z06?
Wow, it looks like the new base Z06 coupe will weigh in at 3524 lbs and the Z06 vert at 3582 lbs! It seems that the new Z06 is now a GT which. The new coupe outweighs my 2010 "Project Crystal" by some 430 lbs. Sure does not follow the C5 and C6 Z philosophy of being the lightest, track oriented model....

I want one too, but not for the track. It's more like the new ZR1 with available automatic trans and convertible top. Not really as performance focused as the old dead C6Z.

But for me, not so much. I LIKED the focused intensity of the earlier Z's, which is why I continued to develop my '10 Z along the same lines as GM but lighter, better handling, more power, appropriate seating, retained all amenities plus emissions legal.
Hmmm... Just think if I could do that, wonder what GM with all of its developmental and engineering capabilities could have done if they had chosen to keep to the original Z06 concept? No sir, I do not need to look forward beyond the business case. And understandably for a corporation recently rescued from bankruptcy and now recoiling from tens of millions of recalls and dealing with ever more constraining Fed Regs, is likely a common sense business decision.
Just makes me appreciate what I have even more.

I don't mind the extra weight as long as it's sound deader. Once I get my super charger on I'm going to sound proof the crap out of my Z. Really has a lot of road noise. I'm a little spoiled, my daily driver is a Lexus EX 350. Even my F150 is quieter on the road.

Yes, exactly. You are proof that the GM business case for totally changing the mission from that of the C5 and C6 Z06's may be financially correct. Something gained for the bottom line, with a blurring of the original brilliant concept - in essence an evolution of the last ZR1, not the last Z06.

We will see next year, but I predict that the new C7Z06 will be faster than a similarly powered C6Z06 for 4-6 laps and maybe a few more, but by laps 8-10 and over the weight will have cooked the tires to a greasy mess, the brake fluid will be boiling and the car will have slowed down 2-3 seconds/lap over its initial run.
However given how few of these cars are really run that hard I am sure it will be a great commercial success.
Given the problems the C7 Z51 is having in the hot Az desert at Bondurant cooking motors without the additon of a blower the cooling will also be dicey.

The weight gain is a huge disappointment.

That is probably the base 1lz model too. I easily see this being 3600+ when you add the premium sound/body part add ons/leather/auto/etc.

Z06 guys are without a doubt the most insular group ever. The vast majority of (actual and potential) Corvette buyers want a fast, sexy street machine. Even most Z06 owners don't track their cars. GM is a for-profit, publicly held corporation with a duty to make money. It is not a small, private performance shop like Hennessey.
GM made 471 Z06's in 2013. That's 3.5% of all C6's. I seriously doubt GM ever got its R&D money back from either Z, especially the Z06 with its valve issues. GM needs to appeal more to the masses if the Corvette, and its HiPo variants are to survive.
At least you can still order a C7Z with a stick, which is something GT3 owners can no longer do.
