Should I purchase GMPP?
I have a 2010 Z and approaching 20k miles and near the 36 mos expiration date, should I buy the GMPP? The only reason I'm concerned is because of the threads on the head problem with some vehicles. I don't track the vehicle but plan on it in the future. I also have the ticking sound around 2k RPM. Thoughts!

So if you plan on taking it to the track in the future and while the warranty is in "effect" then go in knowing that.

If you buy before the car hits the end of the 3 year B2B warranty and the 24K mile mark you can get a 7 year plan. I purchased a Major Guard 0 deductible from Fichtner three years ago for $2500. Since then it has paid for itself and then some. My engine failed and GM covered that but GMPP covered several other things including replacing my Nav Radio, replacing my brake master cylinder, three wheel bearings, crankshaft balancer, the O Ring in the dry sump (had to call them about that since they initially denied the labor code but once I explained the O Ring was inside the tank and could possibly damage the engine they approved the charge). There were a couple of other things but I can't remember them now. The Nav Radio parts cost alone was $1300. I will be taking the car in shortly to get the driver seat track replaced.
Think of it this way. Looking at the JD Power 3 year dependability study results even the most reliable/durable cars 3 years old or older average about 1 repair per year. I basically prepaid ~$350 per year to cover that repair and got much more for my money.

I just renewed mine. Found out that you cannot purchase a GMPP from a vendor out of the state your car is registered in. I also found out that Fichtner does not sell them anymore.
I still renewed as if anything goes wrong, you can save a ton of money. It's worth it.

I could be mistaken, but I think that only applies to California and a few other states (Alaska, Idaho, Kentucky, Florida, Maryland, Oregon and Washington). I pretty sure Fichtner still sells the warranty for other states.

For all the reasons stated above, it's well worth it. Add to that the fact that, if you decide to sell the car, it adds value to the price and it can make your car the one to buy vs. one that has no remaining coverage.

When a car e.g. 2008 Z06 is runs out of GMPP (2017) and is not eligible for renewal (so I'm told), is there another aftermarket warranty company that is respected and worth getting?

The GMPP is no longer run by GM. It is implemented by a financial group, ever since GM's bankruptcy. It also is due to be sold or done away with later this year (If I recall right). GM now has their new GMEPP, which is owned and operated by GM. I was advised to go with them (which I did) for by new Yukon Denali. The coverage options are the same as the GMPP and the coverage was substantially cheaper. Also, it's available to be sold online for ALL states, unlike the GMPP. All dealerships recognize the plan too.
Dennis Fitchner (or any dealership) can hook you up.

The mere potential of a catastrophic valve failure's there along with an awfully large price tag to make it right. Precisely why I have GMPP coverage: catastrophic failure(s).
Next March I'll renew for the last time (2nd) for as long as I'm entitled.
Honestly, without coverage on the LS7 I'd sell the car, providing I didn't have the heads done first.
As another member stated having a GMPP in force at the time of a sale sure enhances the car's value; or, should a buyer not care, then cash it in for remaining value.
I've classified the cost of a GMPP with my regular insurance policy coverage; because, insurance is exactly what it is & what I'm paying for. YMMV

I NEVER buy "extended" warranties, except for the '08 Z. I bought it from Fitchner Chev right before the 36 months ran out. Haven't had to use it yet, but glad I have it. Just in case.

I got a 6 year when I bought the car new in 11/10, so it's currently good until 11/16. I don't plan to mod the car until it's out, and would definitely renew it and keep it unmodded - great peace of mind and the car is plenty quick for me as is...
Do you know how many more years I could add? I think the addition would be money well spent!
