Default talk about stupid luck!!

yesterday i went to take the car out and give it a nice bath and drive it. press the garage door opener and the door only goes up 6 or so inches. turns out the stupid spring on the door popped and it is the older torsion style so i cant just go to home depot to get one. lol just my luck the first beautiful weekend and i can't use my car.

lol, murphy sucks.

You can't manually lift the door? Strange.

Kick out the door man ! Whatever it takes

There should be a release near the motor so you can open the door manually.

Yeah, that broken garage door spring can be a bitch.

I've had it happen before.

Call someone out to fix it, because garage door springs can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing.

Seriously - let someone who is trained and has the right tools and parts handle this job. There's a lot of potential energy in those springs when they're wound up to lift the door.

I had neighbor mangle his thumb and index finger trying to save a few bucks doing it himself. Between his surgery, a cast and rehab, he lost use of his hand for nearly a year.

I just bought a house, garage door opener was broken, guessing it's the spring, but what you say is spot on. I didn't even attempt to fix it myself, looked like an accident waiting to happen Final Destination style.

But, the emergency release worked for me OP. Just got to muscle the door up yourself.

Sheeesh... what a bunch of whoosies.

I've done the repair many times with two 12" 3/8" drive extensions. It takes about an hour and I'm up and running. Just be careful and you'll be fine. Heads and cam on these cars are much scarier.

I guess if you've no mechanical ability though...

I guess that's why some many mechanics are missing fingers.

Dave, are you back from FL?

For what it costs to fix it's not worth doing yourself.

My garage guy replaced both springs and swapped out the rollers for $250 including labor. That's well worth it to not have to mess around with springs....

after watching the vids of how to do this it seems like something i can do myself. but for peace of mind i did call a local company. only reason was cause things look rusty so i want them to take charge if something becomes difficult and not so straight forward.

Had mine replaced in both my doors last year, I was in the garage working when one of them broke, sounded like a bomb going off

I'd say you weren't too unlucky. The spring could have broken when you were halfway out and landed on your car. I've changed out a couple of these spiral springs in my house. As previously stated, these springs store a lot of energy and proceed with caution. By the way, I am a dentist and still have all my fingers and an extra $250 to spend on the car.

The one we had to break, made a loud bang when it broke. And then the entire weight of the garage door was unsupported.
