Local Chevy service dept wants $1200 to check for bad valve guides!
Holy smokes! Just got a call from the dealership telling me that to perform service bulletin 13-06-01-001 it will take (according to the book) 6+ hours for one head and 5+ hours for the other. At almost $100 an hour for labor that's roughly 1200 bucks!!!!
I thought I read somewhere it was only supposed to cost around $250 to have this done. This sucks...

LOL... I was wondering if you had left them a blank check in your other thread... good thing they called first!
Bottom line, most of these dealers don't know how to do it, don't understand it, and don't want to learn... and by charging prices like that, they mostly don't have to fool with it.
You'll have to find another shop to do it, but if the guides are bad GM won't honor their work. Welcome to the Screwed Club

They could replace the motor in 11 hours.

Generally speaking should we get this done just before the warranty is up or just get it done for peace of mind?, Opinions?

The trick is to find a dealer that is familiar with the matter, and who knows how to do the test.
If the results indicate out-of-spec. parts, GM is supposed to authorize the warranty claim for
replacement heads (?) including covering the initial testing. Again, if the car still has warranty...

Have them call Rich at Abel Chevrolet so he straighten them out. He has offered his assistance in doing so.
If everyone did this, more dealers would know how to deal with it giving us more accessibility.

Valve Guide Check
This indicates a dealer that is not experienced at all with the LS7 and not qualified to do the check. I had the same experience with Westside Chevrolet in Houston. Just move on and find someone who is competent.
