I've used the type that slips over and the has a facility for a half inch socket wrench. Harder you turn the tighter it grabs. Don't usually need a wrench though.

Large water pump pliers. Works on everything. Never had it fail in 45-years of working on vehicles.

I went ghetto on my first one, though, and drove a screw driver through the side to get the old one off……..

Yeah, I bought a giant pair of channel locks years ago to get an over tightened oil filter off of one of my Corvettes. Works great, but pretty much destroys the filter in the process.

As I want to remove the original factory filter without damaging it, I'm looking for a less destructive option.

Great tip; thank you, Lance.

I found one at NAPA for $5 and it worked GREAT.

A chevy tech once told me as far as tightening the new filter, to go as much as you can by hand and leave it there.

Does that sound correct?

Depends on how strong you are. Seriously just make sure it's tight. You may not need to give it all you've got even by hand. You will want it off sometime and it will be tighter when hot for changing oil.

Fram recommends turning the filter until it makes contact, and then turn it another 3/4 to one full turn. I'm sure that's fine for every other oil filter regardless of brand.

Are you not allowed to mention a vendor or perhaps not mention the price? What is your point here ?

This is certainly the best way to get a tight fit (my cars with horizontally mounted filters), but I have been happy with the kind that fit the filter and use a 3/8th in drive to remove.

There's no need to tighten an oil filter any more than you can get it with your hands. Again, 3/4 to one turn past making contact does it.

Be careful. I feel fairly certain that the PF48 and UPF48R are fluted differently from each other as I seem to remember. I just use a metal strap type wrench as there is enough room to swing it.

Turn by hand until I first detect contact with the block and the filter gasket. Then no more than one full revolution more. And that is with a film of oil on the gasket surface prior to reinstalling.
