Sounds okay to me. Maybe a better term is "normal".

You aren't going to know by the sound it makes. My old engine sounded just like that the day it dropped a valve and my new engine sounds the same.

I was able to determine that my engine had valve issues by listening to it. How many RPMs did you take it up to in this video? I was best able to hear the tapping sound between 1,500 to 3,000 RPMs. Slowly move the RPMs up while standing outside of the car with the hood open and your foot on the gas pedal.

See that's is the issue.

I could say that mine has a "ticking" noise between 1500-3000 rpm, well more like 1500-2100 rpm on mine.

BUT.... That noise was there before and AFTER entirely new and worked over WCCH heads with no shared parts between the two.

If my "ticking" is indicative of anything at all, it isn't in the heads. Then again if you heard my engine you may not think mine sounded anything what tipped you off.

OPs doesn't sound bad to me from what you could hear.

thank you bill, trying to get others to understand this as well. the ONLY way to tell if you need head work is actually, physically checking them. NO NOISE DOES NOT MEAN YOUR OK. repeat that out loud 10 times.lol

I agree with Bill. In my case at least, my valve train is MUCH, MUCH noisier now than ever, and that's after having my heads redone, with new SS exh valves, bronze guides, new springs, et al. If you were to listen to the noise my engine makes now, you would swear the thing might fly apart at the next green light. It is sooo bad, I took it back to the shop as a follow up to have the noise checked. All was well - just a symptom of the heavy duty springs they use.

In summary, the presence of noise in the valve train may not necessarily mean anything. Ditto for the lack of noise.

You simply can't make a judgment based solely on noise, or the lack thereof.

The Tapping noise was the early indicator for me. It is a Tapping noise and not a ticking noise.

I guess I was fortunate to have been able to hear the sound that was verified by my Chevy mechanic and subsequently repaired under warranty.

I agree that not having a tapping noise does not mean your engine does not have a valve issue. But, it is an indicator.

My experience was similar to Bill. I didn't notice any increase in valve train noise, but I had severe guide wear at 20K. However, with new bronze guides and SS valves, the motor is QUIETER than stock.

I have offered to pay whatever it costs to have my valve train noise reduced. Shop says only ways is to revert to OEM springs, which are less robust than whatI now have, and thus more prone to fail. I often feel the risk would be worth a quieter engine. Meanwhile, I leave it parked, while I sit on the fence between selling the car, and trying a different shop. The more I drive my '03 Cobra, the more I detest the sewing machine of the LS7. Probably not fair to compare the noisy push rodded LS7 to the smooth, quiet operation of the DOHC in the Cobra.

You should hear my WCCH stage 2 heads and big lift cam with this World Challenge vented hood.

The ticking is injector noise.

Yeah that's something I've heard before, although my ticking is louder in that 1500-2000 range than my friends LS3 vette.

My earlier post wasn't to discount what you experienced, just that describing sounds is difficult on a forum. If I didn't already know I could have mistook my "ticking" from 1500-2000 rpm as the same thing as your "tapping", from 1500-3000 rpm

Don't I know you from Bimmerfest?

+1 My injectors are loud as fuuuu. Granted mine are 63 lb/hr injectors and I don't have my stock covers on there, plus a cowl hood lol. The first few times in the car it made me think for a minute, but then I figured out it was the injectors.

With all of the threads on the board, and the cost of these cars, the cost of the long blocks... I think a lot of us can get pretty paranoid at times, sometimes you just need to hit the go pedal or some nice country back roads with tight switchbacks to really enjoy the car. That or if you are fortunate enough to live near a track..

I had my heads replaced at 7700 miles. Done under warranty at dealership valve guide wear > .010 on 3 exhaust valves ticking and tapping from 1700- 2200 rpm. car is 08 z06 car now has 11000 miles there is a faint ticking at about 1800 rpm. what I have noticed is when oil temp. gets to 165 or higher engine becomes very quit with no tick at all. has anyone else noticed this. I was also wondering if anyone out there has had noise return or complete failures after replacement factory heads were installed.
