[Z06] Overheated Starter due to headers
#21
I will check my invoice from the shop when I get home as they did have to reorder the wires. It might have the name of the wires in there.
Is it not accessible with the headers on? Even on a lift?

I don't remember the name, sorry. But its close to the steering rack by the firewall. It has a black plastic wiring shield on it that got a little melty.

94K miles with my Kooks uncoated headers. The starter still cranks like it's new...
BTW... wrapping headers (stainless and mild steel) causes the metal to crystalize and causes it to fracture prematurely.

The failure mode the OP described is a typical one for starters even on bone stock cars. Starts when cold, won't do much when hot (cranks slow or no). It's possible the headers have/had nothing to do with it.
However, if the starter is getting routinely cooked (by headers or whatever), it will eventually fail.

I hope there isn't too much work involved to get this installed.

Thanks John, good to know about this option. Wish I would have known about this when everything was already taken apart.

I saw that one.
But nearest I can tell, there is no space between it and the starter case to allow air to pass through.
I was thinking something more along the lines of this, but it is for a C3:

Keeps the heat off, but still allows the circulation of air along the surface of the starter, and the dissipation of heat from around the starter.
Unfortunately I know of no one who makes anything like this for a C6 Vette though.

Burning Brakes
LT5 motors are a biatch to work on...Everything on the motor is a hassle...Special tools designed specifically for the LT5 only...LOL, the starter is under the damn plenum, in the valley area...stuffed Under an LT5 plenum, is like 5 pounds of Sh*t in a two pound bag...

Has anyone had a problem with the starter overheating due to the headers? When I first start the car and drive it its fine. After driving it and they shut it off sometimes I have to wait awhile for it to cool off before it will start. Is it a good idea to wrap the headers? I already wrapped the starter but it does'nt seem to help. Any advise would be helpful.

Over 4 years on mine with no issues. Gm has a heat shield for the solenoid that comes standard on the Escalades. It just snaps around it. That might be all you need.

Here's how mine ended up:-
Not exactly sure why this happened - whether it was entirely a consequence of fitting headers[Kooks], or whether fitting the headers just hastened the demise of an already failing starter - I don't know.
The motor gradually became reluctant to turn over from stop - for obvious reasons when you look at the hopeless state of the terminal - the nut securing the battery lead was well loosel!
Ended up getting stuck at a gas station unable to start, and needing recovery truck back home.
Starter is easy enough to change from underside if you move the header aside.

You might also want to look into Moroso 74300 and Mr. Gasket 3678 (they appear to be about the same, but the Moroso may be more high tech). Moroso on the left:

Any thoughts on just adding a layer of Thermal Tape/barrier by the headers? I just thought of this as I was doing adding some to some wiring that was getting a little too warm by the headers. I figure a few strips on the starter closest to the headers and leave the rest so it can 'breathe'?
I have some of this stuff laying around
