Default Oops! Poured 1/2qt oil in to valve cover "cap". Now what?

I didnt do this.... My buddy was filling up his brand new built motor and thought it would be ok to add a half qt of oil thru the cap on the pass side rocker arm cover. Big problem or would it be ok to leave it to drain overnight?

Not sure you need to wait for just a 1/2 qt to drain out.

And how did he get the cap off since it is snapped in? Only way to remove it is to break the tabs off. I would pull the valve cover to get the pieces of plastic out of the motor if anything.

i'm assuming it's a different valve cover with a removable cap. LS7's have permanent caps unless you break them off. run the car to operating temp and check the oil (5-15 minutes after shut off) and drain if necessary. Older stock Z's you could run a little more oil on track days to prevent starvation. don't sound the fire alarm just yet

why?
cap is really hard to get off- should be tell for most?
Plastic tabs likely inside engine?

I thought so too, but see Post #, aftermarket valve covers with a standard oil cap filler.

We don't sell our valve cover for the Z06 with a fill cap. It is dangerous indeed. If the customer wants the look with the fill cap on, we weld it in from the inside.

Billet Custom Products new "OS" series Billet valve covers offer a high performance
oil separation feature built in for all Supercharged LS motors!

Buy them now on our Yahoo Store, or contact us for more information on this new version.

From my understanding, the OP was posting for his buddy. Sounds like his buddy did it to his own new engine, not the OP's.

He should have it towed to a chevy dealership and trade it for a c7.

Yeah, he posted it for me. He told me I f'd up but I thought it was a good idea to get a little oil in the top of a fresh motor before starting. That was 3 days ago and I still haven't started it yet. I had a lot of things to finish installing before I could start it. Should be starting it tonight though.

Can I ask a stupid question of the experts here ? (My major specialty, ask the wife)

With a dry sump system isn't the oil pump going to circulate oil in the engine before starting it ? If you put the car in Accessory or another mode does it run the oil pump ?

No, the main pump runs off the crank just like any other LS motor. It will pump if the car is cranking which is what we do to get some oil in the system before actually starting it.

By the way, I had zero issues and the car runs perfect.

Thanks for the input and thanks to my friend for asking the question while I was elbow deep in trying to get everything back together.

The tab,no s, MIGHT break off. No need to do anything for a half quart.
