Default Is this the dreaded tick?

I was driving my car the other day and had a friend in it so I didn't have the radio on. While I was at around 1500 rpm I could hear a hammering sound in coming from the motor compartment. Just to make sure I wasn't hearing things I stopped by another friends house today to let him listen to it to see what he thought and I couldn't believe the look on his face when he heard it. This is a 2011 Z06 with 4000 miles, take a listen to the video and let me know if you think this is normal, especially at 44, 1:05, 1:30 and 2:15.[

That is not injector tick. (Sounds like a rocker that needs adjusting) Not normal!
I'd take it back to the dealer.

I don't know about that. I thought a rocker would have a consistent noise at all rpm even at idle. I would hesitate on taking it to the dealer and have them mess with it. You obviously have a warranty and hardly any miles. I think it sounds normal.

It's under warranty. Bring it to the dealer. Let them diagnose it.

I have a 2011 also, 1300 miles, at idle your engine sounds no different than mine, however as you increased the RPM's I here a distinct extra tapping, that sounds like a loose rocker to me that I have not ever heard in my engine. I would take it to the dealer and get it checked.

Sounds a lot like mine unfortunately. Between 1800-2200 rpm I can hear it inside the cabin when I drive. I'd love to hear what a dealer has to say about it. I'm not taking mine in until I have it clear bra'd. Don't need any marks on my car.

This video sounds very noisey. I went out and listened to my 2009 Z06 with the hood up, and it sounds very quiet-- nothing like this. Have you changed the oil yet? -- If not, change the oil and install some magnetic drain plugs. then drive it 2000 miles on the new oil and check the drain plugs t so see if it catches any debris.

Was this with the engine cold or hot. Do you notice any difference with engine temperature?

I agree with the extra tapping sound at higher RPMs. Take it to a good dealer.

I did change the oil about a 1000 miles ago and when I did I put in the magnetic plugs.

I just went out and tried it cold, the tap that comes and goes was still there. I have actually been watching your threads because I think you stated yours was assembled in May of 2011 the same as mine. That video was at full operating temperature.

I have had ZERO luck with dealers in my area. I had a GS last year and the top was cracked. First dealer said they would order a top and call me when it came in to get it painted. Went back a month later and the service manager couldn't find my information and said he would call me on Monday. Monday never came, LOL

I went back to this same dealer a couple of weeks ago because my car was missing one of the rubber hood snubbers. I sat down, there was nobody else in the service department except 3 employees who were taking about how they have been flogging all the new Camaro SS that come in that they work on. It took them about 5 minutes to finish their stories before they could help me. Same dealer also charged me $18.00 for an oil filter.

2nd dealer I took the GS to found they had a top in stock. I asked them when they wanted me to bring my car back so they could match the paint. He said the paint was so new all they needed was the paint code. When I went back for the top install the first words out of his mouth were that my paint was faded so the top wasn't a perfect match.

I wish there was a good dealer in my area, when I had it running this morning it was running really rough, even with the rpms up. And when you go to do a cold start it seems to have a weird hesitation. I noticed yesterday after taking the videos when it was warm the oil pressure was down to 25 which is the lowest I have ever seen it.

Sounds like my 09 with 24,000 miles on it. I have come to realize that the high performance engines on these cars make sounds that are different from most other cars and if the performance is there and you are not having any problems with power then you may not have an issue.

If this is not normal, why doesn't someone post a normal one?

I listened to vid.

It's sounds just like my 2010. My '10 now has 11,5xx miles. You will hear it inside of the cabin from around 1500-2800 RPM much more definitive than outside at the engine bay. If your giving it more than say 15-20% throttle, I do not tend to hear it.

I told D-Howie the other day that I bought mine new w/5 miles when I drove it off the lot. I had to go 125 miles back home and I heard it at 23 miles. Granted, I was listening for it because of the LS3 ownership and seeing Z06 Board threads. (I also owned a new (2009) LS3 Vert. It had that tick, but it was NOTHing as profound what the LS7 ticks).

GM (in the sticky up top) says there were a 'few' head machining errors on some 2009's, 2010's and 'some' 2011's.

We are waiting for a sticky update to hear what GM says.

I have ALWAYS considered that tick as 'normal', because it seems to me that if it was gonna break, it would have done so by now. Either way, your under 3/36 B2B so if it does, their going to take care of it (unless you have tuned/mod it-then your on your own dime).

Drive it like ya stole it.

I don't think so, my car doesn't make that tapping sound. I would definitely take it to the dealer and get it documented if nothing else.

Take it over to Tom Wong let him have a listen. He will tell up straight up. If you are still in the Portland/Vancouver area. I'm sure he can help you with a GM dealer also.
