Thanks for putting this out there for us. I'll be looking forward to seeing whatever else you find in the way of measurements. By the way, I'm pretty sure this thread will be huge in terms of views and responses.

So a head with "normal" wear will result in NO side-to-side play when extended out over an inch from the seat?

It would be nice to correlate the movement you suggest as wear in your video with actual measurements of the stem (and conversely the ID of the guide).

Yeah about an inch ..remember the valve stem is all the way in the guide...if not then you would never be able to put springs on..the valves are longer than the guides

Great video.

My '07 Z is in the dealer now to replace 2 intake valves and rocker arms under warranty after 17000 stock miles. While they have the heads off, would it be a reasonable request to check the guide wear, and if there is a lot of play, would something like this be covered under warranty as well? Or would it be considered normal wear and tear? What's the fix for this short of new heads?

While they have the heads off I would def. have them check the guides. Even if you have to pay out of pocket for new guides, they are cheap.

Great video. When my heads were pulled I could wiggle mine with my fingers too. I found out some interesting facts regarding this issue yesterday from a very reliable source. When I get to my laptop I will post it up.

Please post the guide measurements. Would be interesting correlate what the video shows on movement to what the measurements are.

Thanks for taking the time to do this.

It would be very reasonable- in fact it would be foolish not to make them check. Call them before they can button it up and make sure they do it. If I was in your position I'd lobby hard for new guides and valves if needed. I'm pretty sure they know there's a potential problem in this area and I'll bet they'd rather do some minor head work instead of replace a whole motor. I'm not saying that's how things would turn out but the preventative logic might just convince them to take care of you.
