Default Dropped #2 Intake Valve

Moded 07 with 40K on clock. Mostly highway miles and never tracked.

Car idled in drieway for about 10-15 minutes, gave her a little pedal to clean the throat and tick, tac, rattle, rattle. What the heck...Quickly shut down the engine and pushed it back in garage. Removed passanger valve cover to see broken inner valve spring, broken retainer and piece parts. I assume interference damage as well. Wow I am soooo glad this happened in the driveway!

I'll hope for the best and will report back...

Road Trip/Off to Quality Motor Sports for repair.

Ouch... sorry to hear that, looking at your mods (QM 600 cam & springs, ported TB/Intake,1-7/8" Kooks coated headers with off road X pipe, Harland Sharp rockers, RAM clutch, 100hp wet NOS, C5 axles, Vett Air charger, Halltech CAI ) are the sprigs aftermarket?
What is the build date of your Z? I ask cause I also have an 07Z with 40K miles built in July of 2006
Hope it's just the springs and valves only and no damage to the pistons.
Best of luck and keep us posted.

Default All was normal

No signals of pre failure. No oil usage and recent compression test was good.(no leak down test data) All fluids changed regularly, and vehicle responded as normal.

I do have N20 however i haven't sprayed in about two years and have only emptied about 5 (10 lb) bottles since install in 07.

My guess is the valve keeper (grooves)seats were worn aiding to keeper seperation ..Just a hunch

Big difference in the type of failure between dropping a whole valve due to spring or retainer failure Vs dropping the head of a valve.

Sorry to hear this. I hope it all goes well with the repair. But watch...the LS7 haters will take this and add it to the stats on the "poorly designed valve geometry" that the LS7 has when in fact, it's a modded engine again.

the springs were probably worn out is all with 33k miles on them. its allways good pratice on any high lift cam and aftermarket spring combo to change the springs every 20k miles or so

I wonder if this is just a case of a broken spring?

You've mentioned "spring kit" a couple times. Is it safe to say that these were aftermarket springs ? Just want to get the facts straight so we know whether or not this was a factory spring that broke.

It has to be aftermarket....he mentioned "inner spring" in his original post, which can only mean dual's

OEM are single beehive style springs.

He said they are dual springs; that's aftermarket.

OP, sorry to hear your troubles. Prob need to swap those aftermarket dual springs more often than 33k miles.

Hopefully you don't much internal damage (or any).

Agreed. Its probably a bad retainer.

Seems like it wasn't a spring failure

OP stated they were aftermarket. Doubt its a broken spring since he said the retainer is broken.
