Default The Heads are off

Well after the Katech 110 Cam install I started getting concerned about the valve guides and possibly a dropped valve, so I have pulled off the heads and sent them off to WCCH for new guides, exhaust valves and their Stage 2 port job. I am also upgrading the rockers to CHE Precision rockers and am going to put them back on with ARP Studs.

Now question for ya... Is there anything else I should look at and address while I have it apart???

Also in an post awhile back someone talked about a spray cleaner that worked well on removing all the carbon from the tops of the pistons. I've tried to search for it but no luck. Does anyone remember what it was???

Thanks.

Mark

Carburetor cleaner works great just make sureyou recoat the cylinder walls with oil. I use lint fee shop towels and then turn the motor I over by hand when done and then wipe off the excess.

They also said that they can mill .030 off the heads to bring the compression up and I can still use the stock pushrods. I saw a post by Jason from Katech confirming that. I run 93 Octane premium where I live and also get it with no ethonal. Think I should mill the heads???

Yes mill them, but check pushrod length. New push rods are only ~$100 so don't cheap out out if you need a different length.

I did the exact same thing a couple months back only I had RPM do it. Everything went back together as planned and the car is running excellent. The only drawback I have noticed is that you lose the sport bike like feeling when you bring the rpm's up quickly. The new SS valves do add a bit of weight to the valvetrain and you can definitely feel it.
I hope all goes well with your head swap. Keep us up to date. Btw I had a few that were out of spec sooo im glad I did what I did.

There's little point in milling the heads unless you bump CR up AT LEAST 2 full points. And if you bump it up that much, you need good fuel. At 11.0 / 1 now, you can expect to see a gain of roughly 1.5% by going a full point and 2.5% going 2 full points. The benefit of raising static CR is when you need to pick up low end torque that you loose running cams with significant overlap. If you're under 30 deg overlap, don't bother.

CHE does a wonderful job. I just got my rockers back from them and I am very impressed. They are rock solid now, whereas before I could wiggle the trunnion by hand.

From what I have found on the forum the .030 will bring the CR up to about 11.5 or 11.6 to 1 and they say the dyno showed around a 15 - 20 HP increase...... I am running a Katech Torquer 110 cam too.

That is why I went with the CHE rockers. I could not believe how much play was in the stock trunions. The rocker shaft moves quite a bit in the needle bearings.

This is the product available at your local Yamaha motorcycle dealer.
Spray it on the carbon deposits. Let it soak for 30 minutes. Use a plastic putty knife to remove the gunk. You may need to repeat for heavy carbon. Then clean the piston top or cylinder head with WD40.
Work great on exhaust ports for those really stubborn carbon deposits.
Safe for Ti parts too unlike brake cleaner.

You can use brake fluid on a lint free cloth. Cleans things up really quickly.

Good luck with the new project Mark! Should be awesome!

I did the Comp trunion upgrade recently. I measured the play in the rockers with the stock trunions and it came in around .12 to .15 side to side. With the Comp trunion upgrade it was around .005 to .008 .

After the carbon gets cleaned out, when it comes back - the engine will retard timing or even start pinging with the higher compression. 11 to 1 is plenty! No fun to to go slower!

EZ-Off oven cleaner works well for piston tops. I've used it. Doesn't hurt the cylinders.

Lye will eat aluminum. I would not recommend using oven cleaner if it has lye, and I think they all do.

Mark - be weary of what you read on this forum (RE: HP gains you mention). There's about a 95/5 mix of BS to good information on these engines.

Mark,

A little off topic, but where in Mountain View are you getting the ethanol free 93?
