Default Stock Hpipe Converted to Xpipe

Awhile back I bought B&B Headers without the X pipe because i did not want to pay $400+ for a glorified pipe! Anyways I proceeded to buy the Magnaflow Tru-X 12in pipe that is suppose to take place of the "H" in the Hpipe, but it does not work with long tube headers because it is too wide to fit in the tunnel and the longtubes stick to far back to put it right before the narrow tunnel. I began searching again and what I found was a $20 Xpipe on ebay that is ony 8inches wide so it would fit in the tunnel like I needed. I do not have the auction number, but all I did was search 3in. Xpipe and it came up. Here are the pics I got of it completed (sorry about the one of it installed, I did this on jackstands and it was near impossible to get a pic!)

You have cut outs welded in before the over axle pipes?

Yea the exhaust shoots sideways and down, plus I wanted to do everything in the X pipe that way if I ever decide to sell I have an extra stock Hpipe in the garage that I can install.

It wasn't worth me buying a new X pipe, but I have a big cam and will have heads done soon so the Hpipe probably was costing me a few ponies and when I get the heads done it would've limited my numbers so I found a solution. Not to mention the sweet burble and pop I get on decel now!

Nice job! A while ago I sectioned the Magnaflow one down the middle and rewelded it to make it fit in the tunnel. Your idea is much easier

Great job,
I did a similar mod to an h-pipe. I made a boom box section forward of the midpoint of the h. It retained the h-pipe burble/stagger sound, less popping and smooth very low RPM pulling (6th gear 55 mph highway uphill grades).

WoW, I'm surprised there been no comments on your "boom box"
How do you like it ? Did it make your car much louder?
And Great looking welds by the way

Just a touch louder. I did the same boom box mod on my 02 Z06 and the results were the same, basement RPM partial throttle torque increase. I learned about boom boxes through an article on performance exhausts, they said that the volume of the boom box should approach the displacement of the engine if possible. You will gain the pressure pulse relief with less but bigger is better for full flow with some decent noise reduction. I figure I am at about 2 liters.
Thank you for the compliment.

Looks similar to the MAC Prochamber that I had on my '04 Cobra. Good job!

The local exhaust guy made me a X pipe. $90 and one hour of looking at old magazines.

The shops here wanted anywhere from $250 to $400. My x-pipe like the one getburnt mentions at the beginning of this post arrives tomorrow. I saw a "how to" video on YouTube by Corsa showing them cutting the stock pipes with a chain cutter instead of a torch. Looks a lot easier and more efficient. My total output to do an x-pipe like his was $30 for the x-pipe and another $20 for band clamps. Rented the chain cutter from Advance Auto. Sure beats forking out $250 or more for a pre made one and shipping!

Following getburnt's example I acquired a 2.5" x-pipe from ebay for $28. I also got two small exhaust pipes from Advance Auto Parts because I figured I would need them as well as a cutting chain I saw used by Corsa Performance on a "how to" video they have for their exhaust. It showed the installer cutting the stock pipes down from the cats using a chain cutter instead of a welder's torch. I found it provided a clean and uniform cut around each pipe. I decided to make my first cuts behind the H section of the pipe. After determining what length I wanted to extend past the x-pipe I trimmed the extra pipes to fit that length. The x-pipe turned out to be somewhat thinner than the width of the original h-pipe so I was able to force the pipes into the x-pipe without much difficulty. I fully tightened the clamps on the extensions I made along with the front openings of the x-pipe. I had enough length on the aft section to make fitting adjustments to the exhaust I was installing. I couldn't believe how small the hole inside the H section actually was!.

I did notice an increase in performance with the x-pipe as well as the elimination of the "diesel" sound when idling or when I turn the car off. My total $$ output for this was under $50.
