Very difficult to believe this statistic.
The number of very low mileage C6 Z06's out there suggest to me that most of the time they are parked and secured in their owner's garage's.

There is an inconsistency with autos.yahoo.com and money.cnn.com.
http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2010/...ars/index.html
Has this top 10 list:
1. Cadillac Escalade
2. Chevrolet Silverado
3. Dodge Charger
4. Chevrolet Avalanche
5. Infiniti G37 Coupe
6. GMC Sierra Crew Cab
7. Nissan Maxima
8. Hummer H2
9. GMC Yukon XL 4WD
10. Chevrolet Tahoe
The auto.yahoo.com says the Z06 is number 1 in the Sports Car segment.
At 1.7 claims per 1,000 insured it is far from the top of the list where the Escalade has 10.8 per 1,000 insured.
Chevrolet Corvette Z06
Segment: Sports Car
Claim Frequency: 1.7 per 1,000 insured vehicle years
Average Loss Payment Per Claim: $41,229
Cadillac Escalade
Segment: Large Luxury SUV
Claim Frequency 10.8 per 1,000 insured vehicle years
Average Loss Payment Per Claim: $11,934

I attened an IAATI training conference a while back and while speaking with one of the instructors there, I was told that C6 Corvettes are actually very easy to steal by someone that knows what they are doing. The instructor said this is because there is a serious design flaw in keyless/remote starting system that these cars use. Apparently GM is aware of this problem but it is not an easy or econimical fix for them so nothing has been done about it.

Actually, many of my auto stores get ripped off all the time with nothing more than a laptop. Watched video of a guy walk up to the car, open the door and start the car. This is not just a GM thing but more of the thieves have caught up in technology to a manufacturers thing. Its like radar detectors, you get a new detector to avoid the cops but before long your dectector becomes obsolete as the cops radar technology improves. It was just a matter of time. At the end of the day locks are for honest people and having your car in the garage means nothing more than a few extra minutes for a thief is all. If they want your car believe me they will take it. The best thing you can do is make it as difficult as possible for them so that hopefully they don't feel its worth the effort when they can steal another one easier. park 2 cars in front of your vette in your garage and you stand a chance

Outright stolen is probably not true.
A call to OnStar, for those that keep that service going is going allow authorities to track the car down pretty easily.
There are so little Z06's compared to base C6's, I'm very surprised at how the statistics are being broadcasted. If anything, there are probably more claims on Z06 because of the nature of the vehicle in getting into mishaps and filing insurance claims thereafter. (knock on wood).

I think the article is a bit misleading. The list really doesn't reflect the most stolen vehicles, but rather the highest costs per claim. Since the Z06 is quite expensive, the claims are quite high when one is stolen. As someone else pointed out, the number of claims per 1000 insured Z06s is only 1.7 where the the Escalade is 10.8 per 1000.

Reading this post makes me think some of ya'll took the movie "Gone in 60 seconds" a bit too seriously. If a thief wants your car, any car, they'll haul it off in 15 seconds. No need to worry about locks, clubs, and computers. Keep it simple. The best defense is to not leave the car unattended... and maintain a good insurance policy.

STOP! If you read this article carefully you will see that this list is NOT a lost of the most stolen cars but rather those with the highest CLAIM rate. That is, those whose claims result is the highest $$ amount. The Escalade is far from the most stolen vehicle (as is the Z06) but it has the highest insurance claim value. If you go to the vehicle theft statistics sites you will that the usual suspects are the top ten (no Z06s even close). This is the list for 2008:
Rank Year/make/model
1 1994 Honda Accord
2 1995 Honda Civic
3 1989 Toyota Camry
4 1997 Ford F-150 Pickup
5 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup
6 2000 Dodge Caravan
7 1996 Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee
8 1994 Acura Integra
9 1999 Ford Taurus
10 2002 Ford Explorer
Source: National Insurance Crime Bureau.

But the thing is, the Escalade is not much cheaper than the Z! The MSRP for the Escalade goes all the way to $86,680 without options. The real finding here is that most Escalades are recovered with relatively minor damage: per the original press release, less than 1 in 4 result in claims for $40,000 or more (i.e. total loss). Whereas, when a Z is gone, it's gone for good and unlikely to be recovered. I wonder where they all go.

When I was looking at Z06's last year, I went to a dealership in Montgomery, Al. and the salesman said they were ripped of for a Z. The car was test driven and brought back. The customer declined to buy and gave the key fob back to the salesman. The fob was switched at that time. The thief came back that night and drove the car away with the real fob.
