Added Headers to the Z06. 554/510 New #'s
When we purchased the C6Z06 we wanted to see what was possible with literally a can only. No headers, CAI, porting or anything else. It has had a .23x/.24x, .609/.619 112LSA cam in it since a few days after we bought it. It made 518/460 with JUST the cam. After the cold air was added it made 535/478 with no other changes other then optimizing the AFR's again.
I came accross a deal for some ARH's that I couldn't pass up and decided to install them. Car was apart for a new clutch anyways so it was the perfect time to add them.
With the addition of the ARH's it is now 554/510 RW with a very conservative tune. AFR's are in the 12.7 range all the way. I will post up the sheet when I get the car back later today or tomorrow.
That is a gain of 19 RWHP and 32 LBFT peak, but there were gains of nearly 40 LBFT in certain places under the curve. The sound from the ZR1 mufflers with a cam and headers is nothing shy of intoxicating.

I am fabbing up the old Z06 muffler onto the Trailblazer SS because since we added Kooks long tubes to it, I am needing to shut it up a little. The Kooks and Corsa cat back are friggin ear piercing.

Nice gains!

Perfect representation, proving that headers to in fact work.... pricey but if you are for certain going to take it (the motor) farther than just an intake+tune, than headers should be on your plate of things that need to get done.

I agree completely. I was happy with the gains, especially the low end TQ. It is very noticable when driving it in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear.

I know headers by themself on a stock Z add very little power (15-20ish). I had given thought to a cam only (I did one on my C5Z) in my C6Z, as honestly I don't want to spend the $2000+ on a set of headers + the cost of the cam installed ($5k+). It seems for sure the biggest gain is from the cam, and the headers just allow the cam to work at bit more efficient.
Cam installs are relativey cheap, but the added cost of headers has turned me away. I have somewhere around 490rwhp on the car now and it is a lot of power for most road race tracks (never have problems passing in the straits). I wouldn't want 570+rwhp as I wouldn't know what to do with it and it would almost be too much. But I could see 530rwhp for cam only being affordable (as I need budget left over for bigger brakes).

It was 464 RWHP bone stock.
It is nice sounding. Not as hollow and empty as the modded mufflers
I was very happy with the gains from the cam. It went from 464 WHP up to 518 with nothing but the cam and a tune. I knew it was leaving a lot of TQ on the table though. Had I not come accross such a good deal on the headers, I would have likely left it alone.
The car was a cam only for 1 1/2 years and I was totally happy on the road course and drag racing. 535 HP was plenty on the road course, but 554 will be even better. The car is setup well and has no problem using the power on track, but I also run sticky tires. When I added the cold air to get to the 535 WHP mark, it is consistantly trapping 131-132 in the 1/4 mile. Hopefully this will add another 1-2 MPH as well.
I am also more then pleased with the added HP, but more importantly the TQ. The 35-40 TQ increase across the board is very noticable under normal driving and I am sure it will be usefull on the track.
To sum it up..... If I had only one mod to do and a certain amount to spend, I would absolutely do the cam over a set of headers if that is what you are asking.
Hope that helped clarify a little

So please clarify, you were happy with the gains from the cam or the headers the most? I am not 100% sure reading your post

Very nice gains. What clutch did you go with?

I picked the mufflers up from a buddy that bought a ZR1 and wanted something different.
It is the Katech LS9X setup. The have a custom aluminum flywheel the manufacture to work with the LS9 pp and disc(s). It is a wonderfull setup. It feels stock and will hold all the pwer that I am going to throw at it. I highly recommend it for people around my HP level.

Rich - THANK YOU for finally being the one to show us a before and after dyno of adding just headers!!! It seemed on some other posts that the Manufactures were hiding.
Did you have the tune re-done with the addition of the headers, or did it just give you the gains that you see here?
Thanks again!

This is basically a before and after showing the typical gains when adding the headers to a cammed car. A stock car would not net the same results as one with a cam since the scavaging effects of the headers would not be utilized as much.

Rich,
About the ZR1 mufflers, what is the sound difference between them and the Z06 mufflers with the valves closed. Are they louder only with the valves open or are they also louder with them closed also? Can you give us a little more info on the cam such as durations?
Thanks,
Gary
