Default Blown Motor

For those that care.

Car is 2008 Z06. Daily driver. 31,xxx miles.

Bone stock motor.

Headgasket went, which mixed oil and coolant starving the bearings on cylinders 5 and 6.

Engine will be covered under warranty.

Car was being "driven", under load in 1st gear when this happened.

I cannot believe how fragile these things are. GM should have built these a little more reliable like the LS1. You could throw anything at an LS1 and it will live, big cams at 100k miles, nitrous, etc

About 4 miles a day. Maybe 3-5 stops depending on traffic. 35-45mph zones.

I have taken the car on several road trips this year (bought in January). Including a trip to Vail, CO and back. About 1800 miles without a hickup.

Good that your engine was not tuned or modified internally.

glad to hear its being covered. My bone stock motor blew too, except mine broke a valve spring then dropped a valve into the cylinder shattering the piston and cracking the block.

OP: I'm glad your warranty in intact and it will be covered.
A blown head gasket could do this to any car. It has nothing to do with as you say "how fragile these things are".

I am thinking more along the lines of oil starvation than blown headgasket. Blown head gaskets are almost non-existent on n/a vehicles, much less LSX ones. The stock head bolts on these cars have been used for 800+whp setups MANY times. The main reason people swap to ARP studs or bolts is because they can be re-used over and over since they aren't TTY like the stock bolts are.

The car was bought used correct? Wonder what the odds would be the previous owner tracked the vehicle?

I dunno if going from my rock solid LS2 to LS7 was such a great idea. It seems a lot of people have engine issues. I hardly see any LS3 or LS2 engine issues. Maybe I need to extend my warranty.

the new 2009 engines fix pretty much all problems that the previous engines had and its covered under warranty, so there's really nothing to worry about. just dont mod it out and you're fine

I got a great deal on a 2008, so I am in the 2008 boat. Oh well. I will get extended warranty and hope for best. Just scary about how fragile the LS7 is.

The 2008 comes with a 5yr/100k mile powertrain warranty. How much would you need to extend??

Depending how much it is, as long as possible. I wanted to keep the Z06 as a car I would eventually give my son (who is 4 now).

No, more like 24th. He is going into the Marines like his dad first. Mandatory family commitment.

It's a hand-built high performance engine....what do some of you expect? It is as reliable as can be expected, comes with a warranty, and makes more power than any previous N/A production engine GM has ever produced - and it passes strict emissions standards!

Fragile? I don't even know what that means. Exercise warm-up procedure, maintain it like it should, and listen to when it's telling you something is amiss, and you'll get years - if not decades - of enjoyment out of this engine. If you mod it, realize that it stands a great chance of an abbreviated life. That's life in the world of modified high performance engines/cars - not "if" it will break, but rather "when".
