[Z06] Z06 Trailer Hitch

Z06 Trailer Hitch
I've had several people asking about the hitch we put on our Z so here we go. Top Flight installed it after a local shop thew up their hands when faced with the task. We used a C6 hitch and heavily modified it.
The hole that was cut into the frame was done by the trailer hitch shop. Obviously they used a grinder instead of a drill. We cleaned up their work to install the side pieces.
All in all, it was a pretty easy install.
As far as how it works, in a word, perfect. We towed our Wells Cargo out to Spring Mountain from SD and you couldn't even tell it was there. Got 23 MPG towing.

Or find a front trashed Z06 and build a trailer with just the back half of the car, that would look cool!!!!!!
Personally, I don't think a car like a Z06 should have a hitch for towing but whatever works for you. Good job @ modifying, adapting, and overcoming your trailer hitch issue with a Z06.

Great info!
For those of you who don't like to see the hitch on a Z06, what suggestions do you have if the owner wants to use race tires/wheels on the track? Sport Cups and Hoosiers are not very safe on public streets, especially if going a long distance, as in this case from San Diego to Las Vegas. Either do what jamsvet did or buy a pickup and trailer and tow the Vette, much more expensive.

Top Flight is a Corvette shop here in San Diego. They have done a lot of mods on our Corvettes. As far as "not in a million years" I like to hammer the car. You just can't take all your gear and the wife to the track in some semblance of comfort; not counting the tires. Plus, the trailer fits in my garage.

Remember, this is not for towing a boat or a horse trailer, it is for towing a small trailer to the track with tires, tools and extra fuel. Folks have been doing this for years with Corvettes. The problem is that because of the valves on the mufflers taking up a lot of room at the wrong spot, the two leading manufacturers of ready-made sports car hitches have not come out with a model for the C6Z. The alternative is a truck and trailer, which is a much larger space and financial commitment.
Nice job on the hitch. Something to consider since San Diego is only a few hours away from me. Question - I'm not clear on exactly what was cut into the frame?

A hole needs to be drilled into the frame on each side to support the outside arms. A bolt passes through a small backing washer/plate through the frame then into the hitch arm. Nothing needs to be cut; the first "professional butchers" did the grinder cut. At the center of the hitch, a "U" shaped piece was fabricated to be bolted through the rear frame cross member and the bottom of the "U" welded to the hitch.

You did a great job on that install.
I almost did the same. bought a hitch from a forum member then decided i would do my track days on street tires, sold the hitch to another forum member
we seem to have similar tastes in cars........ yellow C6 Z and a 66 L72
