While browsing over on Corvette Action Center I came across a post showing Gm's latest filing for "Zr-1". It was submitted on Dec 5, 2006. It could be as was stated that they didn't want to lose the trademark like Dodge did with "Viper". Anyway, if you want to see the trademark, go over to USPTO.gov and do a search on the this trademark number. http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?...ate=7985p1.1.1 77056955
I'm not sure if it has any pertinence at all. I just came across it while searching for build numbers of the C6 lineup. I hope it's not a repost or anything and if it is I apologize.

If it's true then I love the idea. Resurrect a historically significant Corvette name which once signified the highest performing factory Vette. They could correct all the design similarity issues which made the ZR-1 less than a stellar sales success. Down the road this would result in people overlooking the former fact. Nice. Just make the car look as much like the C6.R as possible.
Then GM could save the Ray (Sting, Manta, Devil) tag for an even higher performance absolute flagship car in the design language of the Enzo/Carrera GT style.
I agree with Bwright....I have a real soft spot for the ZR-1 name, as do many of us that grew up with the C4 in the 80s, and that would be a fitting tribute to a new, higher performing Corvette.
I have always thought that the "Z06" name was inappropriate for the current car, considering how big a step up it was from the C5 Z06. If in fact the new car is called "ZR-1," then the "midlevel" Z06 would make sense to me.
Maintenance of a trademark requires the owner to have the mark in "continuous use" for the past 5-years. I don;t believe cars are different than consumer packaged goods, so that would mean that GM IS indeed/at least planning to use the ZR1 moniker. Could be interesting.
I do not know who would want to take the name ZR1. I would think the " Stingray" name plate would be more valuable abd a better choice. I assume Dodge lost the Viper name in Europe, because it still says it on the side of my car.

You are right as far as your statement goes. Once a trademark is federally registered there are requirements for maintaining it. However, one can begin the registration procedure by filing what is called an intent to use application. You will notice that GM has ZR-1 registered as a trademark on non vehicle products. What they are now going after is a registration covering, in one application vehicles and in the other non vehicle products. GM may have learned from Ford when it found out when that it no longer owned the USTM Reg for "GT40". Note also that they filed on "Stingray"
I went to the USPTO link and searched for ZR-1 and I found that GM renewed the trademark for ZR-1 specifically for "Motor land vehicles, namely automobiles" on November 3, 2006. So it appears they have one trademark for the name on a car, and another for use on merchandise and accessories.

I think that the Viper name is valid in the US, but someone other than Dodge owns it in the UK. Not sure about the rest of Europe.
