Default Here is the update on My Z06 losing power at the track and why with PICS!!!

Here is the update on my Z06 loss of power......

It turns out there are two stickers made of a rubber like quality attached to the inside of the air snorkel. They are located between the air filter and the throttle body. You would never even notice these stickers here even after swapping filters as they are located in the longer narrower part of the piece.

We weren't sure if these stickers were for air flow control or deadening the sound, etc....

After getting a phone call back from GM, we found out the stickers are for impregnating carbons. They are there to absorb the hydrocarbons that are released when the car is pushed hard.

Apparently some of the oil vapor can travel up through the throttle body. Our guess is that the oil vapor mixed with the glue and diluted it causing the decal/sticker to come lose.

It is a great thing the computer detected this and shut down the car.
The tech found the sticker just passed the throttle body flap and was able to pull it out before it entered the engine.

Once diagnosed it was 5 minutes to reassemble!

I apologize for the lousy pictures but all I had with me was my camera phone.

This is the piece where the stickers are attached inside with glue:

This is a pic of the remaining sticker:

and another:

you can see the glue residue on the bottom where the sticker was:

Here is the actual sticker:

This gives an idea on the size:

I love that it says do not remove

I think it shut down when the sticker hit either the MAF sensor or the throttle body sensor downstream - hence code P2119 etc. I can't figure out how it got past the MAF sensor to the throttle body. Anyway, due to the absence of a PCV on our cars, these little stickums must be part of the air polution - crankcase ventilation system. What a crock of horse pucky . . .

Glad to see the problem was found and that it was a minor one. Great pics, thanks for posting and keeping everyone informed.

Wow! you were correct. We wouldn't believe it.But hey that beats what it could have been. Now the majic question. Is this a very rare occurrence? Will it continue to happen? Is there a way of correcting this at the track if it happens again so you can drive home?
Glad you got the car back and it was minor. Also glad you had a tech that figured it out.

So what is GM recommendation? Take them out and remove the glue?

Thanks,

Funny thing was that when I posted banana in the tail pipe in the other thread, my first thought was something blocking the intake but I could not come up with anything good. I was thinking maybe some small animal or something.

My prediction: "Sorry, sir, we cannot remove those little stickums 'cause they're part of the polution system . . ." Of course, we could remove them ourselves IF they aren't hooked into some telltale system. I'm picking up the service manuals today (Fichtner got a shipment in last week and sent out the ones that were on order, just have to drive to my office to pick them up) and will try to research the issue.

When I talked to Short-Throw a couple days ago, I asked him if a mouse got into his intake - I thought I was joking but . . .

I am so Happy for you that it was a simple fix and that that thing didn't get into the engine.

So... when driven hard some oil vapor can get back into the intake tract and these pads absorb it? So the Z06 needs depends now

Did it damage the MAF sensor at all? Those wires can be fragile.

In the C6 they are located just under the filters, not in the snorkel, and yes they are part of the pollution control system and one of the reasons the C6 gets ULEV. There was a post in C6 Gen with a link to GM training videos where they explained it.

So can these stickers just be left off? If so, wouldn't it be wise to remove them BEFORE they get sucked???

Allan,

I see no evidence of detection. And you are correct, GM would not want these removed.

My advice is that if you're going to track the car, check the snorkel as a preventative measure every few times out. It is very easy to access.

Mike,

I’m glad to here that your problem was a quick fix, however, you said;“Once diagnosed it was 5 minutes to reassemble!” I’m curious, did your dealer actually have these in stock (my dealer doesn’t even stock an oil filter) or did the tech re-glue the old ones back on or did you just leave the dam things off?

Thanks for sharing!
