Default 2006 Z06 transmission upgrades

On my bench at this very moment is a 2006 Z06 transmission/differential assembly. I had the pleasure of disassembling the transmission today and wanted to share a few things with you guys on what I found. Right off the bat you will notice the addition of the external cooler pumps and the entirely different tailhousing and differential case. GM has made major changes to the diff/tailhousing mounting surfaces to keep the two joined where this was a major problem on the C5's. Internally in the transmission there were also a few changes with the most significant being that they upgraded the outputshaft from a 27 spline to a 30 spline shaft (Viper size). In doing this the internal spline of the pinion gear was also increased. Some more changes being upgraded cluster gear to a one piece (more Viper stuff),Roller bearings insted of bushings on the shift rails,Revised 3-4 key springs (same crappy keys),compressed carbon lined Reverse synchronizer (no more brass),rear extension housing gasket instead of silicone, and the addition of ports in the case for the cooler fittings. I am doing a full micro-polish,billet keys throught, bronze fork pads,RPM Forks, blueprinting,LG mechanical cooler pump set-up,and possibly a custom 5-6 ratios. I will have todd post the pictures to show some side by side comparisons of the updated parts by both us and GM. Stay tuned

Great Info-Thanks for posting

I know the car is well engineered to take no the power of the LS7.
Now that you had a look inside, do you think it is engineered to take the stock torque with sticky tires??? Many C6Z owners will make mods that will produce much more torque and that could be a concern.

Good deal Rodney! Keep us all up to speed on where you take this drivetrain!

By the way; the A4 tranny you just built for one of our customers cars shifts like a bastard!!! The guy loves it! The core is in route back!

That is I have a strange question. You say the guts are similar to the Viper.I heard that the Viper differential from good sources is the same as the Jeep Cherokee. So does this mean the Cherokee has one
heck of a rear?I know a guy that blew his rear out of his 03 Srt.

Wow, It looks like GM went to great lengths to keep the diff from twisting which was the major problem on the C5's

Sounds good Rodney. I had one of your transmissions in my supercharged '04 and it was awesome. If I ever need any upgrades on my Z, you'll be the first one I call.

Also, now that you have looked at the insides and seen the upgrades, how much power/tq do you think the car is capable of holding, and what do you think will be the weakest link.

We haven't opened the rear up yet. The transmission has a few similarities with the newest Viper transmissions.
