Default 26" tall Drag Radial vs 28" Drag Radial > pros and cons ?

I am thinking about replacing the stock 19" x 12" rear wheels on my supercharged 2011 GS (A6) with a set of 17" x 11" rear wheels and then using a set of drag radials.

My question is ... I am stuck between using a 26" tall (315 / 35 -17”) Drag Radial or a 28" tall (305 / 45 -17”) Drag Radial on this 17 x 11 rear wheel.

BTW ... The stock 325 / 30 -19" rear tire on the GS is right in the middle between the 26" and the 28" Drag Radial ... it's 26.7" tall

So, what to use ... the 26" or the 28" tall tire ?

1. Since the 28" is bigger in diameter, it will fill out the rear wheel well more ... better looks

2. And since the 28" has a 45 aspect ratio, it will have more sidewall than the 26" tire that has a 35 aspect ratio ... more sidewall flex and better initial traction

3. But, since the 28" Drag Radial is taller than the 26" tire, it may hurt overall acceleration since it effectively raises the drive ratio of the car. (like going from a 2.73 axle ratio down to a 2.56 ratio)

So .... what would you choose ?

Ron,

.

You don't mention how the car will be used, nor what TC, nor what other power mods have been added. And that's just for starters.

more gear is better, always IMO, given you have same traction on both. On a boosted car, different story I guess..

1) The 315/35/17 Hoosier fills out the wheel well just fine.

2) It also has lots of flex as shown in the picture below.

3) Yes, that is true. I once tried a 28" tall M&H tire (can't remember the exact size) and ended up running over a tenth slower with it compared to the 275/40/17 Hoosier (25.8" compared to the 25.9" 315) I was using at the time .

Are you auto or manual transmission?

I'd go with the 26's. You should consider a set of 3.42 gears too. I've got a similar set up with eforce and manual. Just had RPM transmission do a set of 3.73's for me. I'm really happy with them .

the hoosiers consistently outrun the mickeys in this particular setup . I run the hoosiers and the car hooks books and cooks . And they last longer than the mickeys

They don't last longer with these kind of burnouts.

You do best due to your tall gears going with the short tires both tires mention here will hook at the track Mickeys will hook better on the street in my car.

Width being equal, a taller tire will have a larger contact patch.

I don't know the math ... but I am guessing that an automatic trans C6 with a 2.56 axle ratio and a 26" tall rear tire has about the same overall ratio as a 2.73 axle ratio with a taller 28" rear tire.

Close anyway ...
