Default 70 inch APR rear wing and trunk question

Does anyone know if the truck lid can still open if you have an APR 70 inch wing on the car? Seems like it would get in the way. I'm in the market for a wing, but my car needs to be "practical" as well.
Thanks!

I have the 70" APR wing and it adds enough weight to the hatch so that it won't stay up. I found a replacement strut company on eBay and using the formulas and measurements posted, moved up two numbers from the stock hatch struts and it's working fine so far. Couple of other friends with the same wing just use a prop rod to keep the hatch open when loading and unloading stuff from the cargo area.

There you go OP, gets installed to the tailgate, but too heavy for the stock struts.

Maybe if they took all the rice out of it the weight would go down?

Why not frame mount the wing?

Without a proper support from the frame up to the hatch, you are getting a lot of movement back there if all it is mounted to is fiberglass.

Won't that wing rip off at high speeds if it just mounted to the hatch and not the frame?

I have been up to 168mph and all it did was keep the rear planted, so no it doesn't fly off

Looking at it, I thought it mounted at the rear quarter panels right next to the hatch, not the hatch itself.

Thanks for the info!

by any chance, do you have the link to the ebay product you used? I have bought struts before for other applications where weight was an issue and most struts are universal when it comes to mounting them.

My correspondence with geewez:

Geewez:
I used a company called Lift Supports Depot on ebay. Go to liftsupportsdepot.com and check out their site. Do a search on these two part numbers: 4516 and 6522 and compare the specs to the stock apps for your year C6. I used a pair of 4516 struts. But you'll notice part number 6522 says for aftermarket spoiler cars. You can also see a picture of the rear wing on my C6, I posted a picture of the rear of my car a few pictures after yours. I'm using the same wing as yours, the APR GT500 70" wing except we're not using the aluminum legs that come with the wing. You can see on my picture we're using a custom made mount for the wing which I think looks better than the APR mount. Hope this helps.

Me:

Awesome, thanks man! I did some digging and saw that 4516 says OEM equivalent. I ordered a pair of 6522s to give it a whirl. We'll see how it goes.

---------
Final outcome: the 6522 set was legit.

Did you increase the stiffness of your rear spring to compensate for the added downforce?

But that only deals with compression / rebound. Adding the wing would have the rear squatting at high speed with stock spring would it not?

I see ur point. I haven't had any issues with my GTC500 and I have not seen anyone replace or modify their springs after a wing was added with Magnetic Ride.

I did not. Also did not have mag ride, just standard GS suspension.

that's what I am saying..plus most of us driving our cars will be street driven as well. Issue free here after 400 miles done in 1 week. Did a handful of 150mph pulls on the highway. No cracked deck lid..no suspension issues.
