Racing Headers whats the point of cats on?
Hi guys,
I'm gonna get some racing headers (LG or kooks or AR) but before I do I was wondering what is the point of having Cats on them.
I just moved to MD and I don't think smoke test is required... regardless in the moment you buy racing headers your car is not street legal and very likely you will fail the smog test.. and if you do extra tunes for sure... so why is there a need to have cats on racing headers?
I wanted to make sure I'm not missing something before I pull the trigger on catless
I like the environment.. but i like power and flames from the exhaust more

Pollution and odor. Cats have to be one of the big reasons we have the high performance cars that we do. I vividly recall the air injection reaction systems of the past, plus the detuned cars and smog. I'll gladly use the high-flow cats.

Maryland use to do a treadmill test, but now they just plug into ECM/OBD.
All street cars require CATS by law. If I remember I think on most cars they check for mufflers and cats, but the vettes so low they can't see if the vette has cats.
P.S. Cats are on racing headers so there TREE HUGGER approved and street legal.

jenablist Maryland cars have to do emission test every 2 years unless +20 years or older. Keep your stock exhaust so when it's time to sell the next owner will be able to pass inspection.

You may want to call some Maryland speed shops to find out what you can and can't do to pass Maryland emissions test.

A tune will allow you to pass OBD emissions testing. Cats will be needed with visual inspection.
Illinois does not have visual inspections. I pass emissions with no cats and my cam.

Today's high flow cats actually flow very well and we'll usually only see about a 3-5 hp difference vs going without cats. In an N/A application cats will last a long time, but boosted applications do tend to burn up cats due to EGTs. Good tuning can prolong their life.
We always recommend going with cats for emissions, sound and smell. The only true benefit I see of going without cats is you'll pay less.
Feel free to call, PM or email me anytime with questions or pricing.

From a MD resident depending on what county you live in they will do the emission test on your car. No they cant see if you are using cats. If you throw a code a simple delete program can help TRUST ME it helped me a place called FBC Performance in Baltimore did mine and I passed emission no problem with LG longtubes and no cats

In Maryland it depends on the county. In the rural areas there is no testing. Emissions issues aside, it is best to have cats as they reduce the smell. Also, some places will not work on, or touch anything that does not have cats.

Give us a call. We an get you taken care of. We can get you the headers installed and tuned with a tune that will pass inspection/emissions etc. They dont do the sniff test anymore. They just plug in and as long as all your readiness codes are ready no check engine lights you are good to go.
