Default Help the car is broke down !

My brother-in-law just called and he is getting towed home. The car is a 2007 convertible auto with 40k miles on it. This car is babied big time, he never drives it hard and takes very food care of it. He drove to a store and when he went to park the car acted like it was still in drive. He shut the car off and now it acts like it does not work in any gear. I told him to unhook the battery but that did nothing to fix the problem. Then I had him turn the ignition button to accessory mode and shift into R with the engine shut off and the car would start in R! No Trans fluid leaks, no smells, no noises, no strange events before hand. When he shifts to park the car is in park and it does not roll. He has tried to get it to move in any gear and tried the paddle shifters but the Trans acts like it is in neutral.

So what's going on?

Sounds like the shifter cable broke. It usually happens at the shifter end. There are several threads here on how to diy fix it.

They could not tow it last night because the transmission is stuck in park. I am going to drive over there tonight and check the Trans shift lever. I can't remember what side it is located on but I guess I will find it when. I get under the car. Does the linkage pop off or does it break?

You most likely wont need to get under it. It's all done from inside under the console. You'll have to take the console off. If it's stuck in park and the shifter does not move at all you might also want to check to see if the solenoid is releasing the shift lock mechanism. Search for "stuck in park" threads. There is one here on page one I think. If the shifter moves freely but doesn't take the car out of park then the cable is disconnected/broke.

Not sure why they can't tow it. Flatbed is probably the wrong way to do it. You need to have a truck with a lift that can grip around the rear wheels and then lift them about 2 inches off the ground. Works nicely and you don't have to worry about what gear the tranny is in.
