Any decent auto parts store should have them. Got mine at Autozone.

EDIT: They also sell a 33mm socket - sometimes the nut is a 34 and sometimes its a 33, so double check before purchasing.

Thanks guys. I found one at Oriellys today. Both nuts were loose, the passenger side was worse than the driver side. I only have a 100ft lb torque wrench so I just tightened them with a standard half inch drive until I couldn't tighten them any more. I snugged them good but didn't use a breaker bar or anything like that. Took me all of ten seconds to do.

This might be my imagination but the noises disappeared from the back and my shifts no longer feel loosey goosey. Still a tad notchy but MUCH better than it was. Feels like a new car! Who new it would be something as simple as that. They will probably loosen up again but it's a 10 second fix. I'll just add it to my maintenance items.

Thanks so much for the tip. Gotta love this forum!

BTW, a 33mm socket worked for my car which is an '08 with Z51.

Guys,

I have a 2009 base model, build date is September 2008. It uses the 33mm socket.

I have some clunks and/or noises in the back, so I figure I might have loose nuts. I started torqing the nuts at 90lbs. I wanted to see how loose the factory nuts were. I worked all the the way up to 120lbs. They did not move one hair.
I don't want to break them loose if I don't have to.

Seems obvious, but I'll ask either way: should I do anything at this point?

Thanks,

Ric

Consider yourself to be a lucky guy, and just check them once a year.

We have a 2009 built the same month as yours. Both nuts were loose by about 10k miles, the dealer did the GM bulletin fix (new nuts and special red Loctite). At about 50k miles I checked them again, and they were loose again. Went through the bulletin procedure again, now I'm checking them every year.

After a few thousand miles with the re-tightened axle nuts I was still getting some noise. Nuts were still tight. Not as bad as before though. So I tried spraying some motorcycle chain grease into the splines. backed off the nut and sprayed the grease into the splines as best I could. Re-tightened the nuts and now virtually no noise of any kind. I will probably have to repeat the application every now and then but it's a only a 10 minute fix.

Default YES! You are correct!

I just replaced my axle nuts (the old ones took 1/4 turn to get to 140 ft lbs) and all of my drivetrain noise is gone. What a cheap fix to a nagging problem. I bought the new nuts at Classic Chevrolet (Houston) and they threw in a nice tee shirt for free. Thanks to this forum for the great advice.

Does anybody know the part number(s) for the axle shaft nuts from GM?

Are they same on both driver and passenger sides?

Any idea on the pricing?

Since it looks like the old nuts should not be reused I'd rather just order new ones if they're not a complete rip-off price-wise.

Thanks in advance!

5 bucks apiece from autozone or almost any other parts store. Cheapest oem parts retailer would be parts taxi

Pardon my ignorance, but you can actually buy the nuts at a local parts store?

Thanks guys!

Unfortunately this did not solve the issue for me...

Sorry to thread jack, but I started a thread here with my ticking noise issue - http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...ith-video.html. Any help would be massively appreciated.
