Default the new Z is dead!! catastrophic failure

Well I had a very bad occurrence... I dont know for sure what is blown up but the Z is now locked up and dead. It happened without even running it hard. The motor AND tune were factory stock except the addition of headers. I never revved it over 6870 at any time and I think it broke a piston. I'm not sure yet but it doesnt appear to have dropped a valve. It is locked up and I pulled the plugs and 2 of them were smashed shut. This is ridiculous with a stock combo. This is exactly why I did not lean on the tune without a wideband. Have others seen the pistons break without really running them very hard? I will pull the engine this weak and share my findings but I'm pretty sure its a piston and hopefully the block survived.

I cant believe that crap Norm. I know how meticulous you are with your tunes and for this to happen to a stock one is ridiculous.

All I can say is how sorry I was to hear about it.

I'm hoping the block survived. I looked past the TB blade and saw chocolate milk in the bottom of the intake... not good

Hate hearing this Norm! I was really looking forward to seeing you run the new car at MIR this fall. Hope it's not as bad as it sounds and you get the Z up and running sooner than later.

I suppose you don't venture to the Z06 section cuz they'll tell you exactly what failed ....

I'm still planning to get it together but I'm wasting a lot of valuable tuning time... not to mention money

not too often... I'm pretty sure it didnt drop a valve because I pulled all the rockers off and put a straight edge and all the valve stems are perfectly aligned.
This is a pic from my videoscope thru the spark plug hole....looking down at the piston top. Looks like a piece is missing

If you don't have pieces in the IM, the intake valves are still there. You could check the headers, which will have to come off anyway.

But my question is: Were the two smashed plugs on the same crank throw? Like maybe 3/4 or 7/8.

Oh sh*t, that SO sucks to hear Norm.
I'd heard about some of these potential LS7 internal issues but never wanted to believe that they were actually 'common occurrence' at all.

Consistant 1/4 mile times in the mid 10 seconds, A4 conversion with high 6,850 RPM shifts? Not running it hard? Doesn't sound factory stock to me.

it has headers only..and a converter..other than that it is factory stock..right down to the tune..I still have cats on the car...if you are insinuating different feel free to come look at the carnage...apparently you don't know me or you would not make such a statement. and yes 6880 is as High as it was turning. why is this so hard to believe? there have been bone stockers without headers going quicker and faster.......and in your opinion(which doesn't mean a whole lot) 6880 is running a stock z hard?

I think he is referring to your avatar which shows front wheels in the air and then you saying you don't run your cars hard.
