Hmmmm...I just purchased my shifter in January 2013 and have not even installed it yet. Was planning to install is very soon though.
Should I just buy this first and if so, how long of a wait will it be? Or do I just install my shifter and evaluate the condition of my OEM lower box?

It's a LEVER that changes the fulcrum on the shifting mechanism. It changes nothing at all on the tranny and will not (cannot) hurt the trans. Going back to stock is easy of you want.
Also, contrary to (apparently popular) belief, there are no springs involved.
Be forewarned that it does increase the effort required by your muscles to shift the car. That just basic physics. Some folks don't like that. Over the first three months or so (your experience may vary,) shifting with the MGW gets easier as (a) your arm muscles adjust and (b) the shifter breaks in. It will also shift more easily once the trans warms up.
As I said previously, I've had an MGW in my Z06 for the past 4 years and ~50k miles and I love it. But then I've had short shifters in my manual shift cars since my first VW bug (with Porsche 912 motor ) waaaaaay back when... I just like that precise feel in the shifter mechanism.

I'm my experience, it takes no more muscle power to shift, and I would go so far as to say less muscle or effort to use. I shift using just a couple of fingers all the time......click, click and off you go.
In the end, I have found it is considerably more easy to use than stock. I agree it has a different feel, but in a good way

You need the shifter with the allen set screws that intersect the mounting bolts of the shifter base. They go in at a 90 degree angle to these mounting bolts. They're there to ensure that the bolts stay tight.

MGW Shifter
6th shifter scheduled for delivery today, I have put one in every Vette I have owned....shifter box ordered this AM will have it Wednesday. Can't say enought about the quality of this product...second to none. I have tried the other brands, they don't come close. Kudos to the entire staff at MGW....customer service comes first!!

Ordered the box and new model shifter. Can't imagine any scenario where this set up isn't superior given my experience with the "old" (late 2011 version) shifter.

Mine is the original from 05, can you imagine how bad it is, but I've been holding out for this box for the last year. Thanks George.

no worries. if i wasn't clear then i apologize. we have a VERY liberal upgrade policy where we dont even limit it to the original purchaser but the intent is to upgrade ALL existing MGW shifters to the best ones. this keeps the product quality at its highest potential .
you can imagine how much money we would lose if everybody kept reselling their MGW shifter that has been resold like 10 times and i knock 100 bucks off everytime . lol we do lose money on the upgrade. but we made money on the first shifter so we share in the investment for the upgrades not just pass it on to the customer.
most people actually just sell the MGW shifter used and get more than 100 bucks credit so theres that option also...
