Mods and a tune vs warranty
I want to get headers, cold air intake, 160 thermostat, oil catch can and a nice tune, however it comes at the cost of losing my warranty. I have a 2011 GS 6 speed convertible with a little over 3,000 miles. I have a diablo sports tune but of course with speed junkies it's not enough. my question: is the quest for speed worth the risk of losing the warranty. Does the drive train hold up well enough to give up the warranty?
How many of you would take the plunge and do the mods vs hanging on to the warranty?

I've had plenty of work done under warranty. As long as the mod didn't cause the problem, it was ok. If in doubt, go to the dealership near you and ask them...most vettes are modded one way or another.

With smaller $$ repairs (like a water pump etc mentioned above) some dealers will cover it under warranty. However GM seems to be clamping down now and requiring verification of tamper free/non oem computer programming via screen shot etc on high dollar repairs. There was a memo sent out from gm to dealerships regarding this not long ago. I suspect gm (and many mfgr's will continue to clamp down even harded/more strict in the near future as they try to control costs.
I heavily moded/tune but was nearing the end of my 3/36.
Had they offered 5/100 like they do now I probably would have had second thoughts and waited a considerable amount of time.
A simple example I've seen is a C6 (with computer modified) in for service becise of cel. The tech scans the programming and then throws his hands in the air as he's not qualified to think outside the box and work with non standard programming..
Thus you are at the mercy of a non warranty diagnosis/repair at a performance shop.
Thus the old saying: You play you pay.

thats why i went with the mods i did on my c6..w/ factory Z exhaust system, and airbox..and with the tune..runs great , looks stock and i'm near 470 hp..
kaliforneia does crazy things too you...so i did what i thought i could get away with, Smog stations, the state, and GM !
so for the $1000 i spent for the hp..i feel it was worth it..and i love the sound to boot..

U might consider discussing your desires with the dealer and asking them to install a GM hot cam. The GM cam is mild, but designed to give you about 50 hp and great drivability. Then see if they are OK with you doing CAI and headers.

If you want to play with your car just set aside around $5,000 in case something breaks and then go ahead and Mod your Vette. If you cannot afford to set aside $5,000 then the answer is NO! enjoy the car as it is.

Since you probably spent $50-60 for a performance car that you now feel needs a little more power, why let a warranty keep you from that extra enjoyment.
You wouldn't buy a baseball to play catch and never hit it with a bat.
Play hard and have some fun.

yea im aware of the risk...but i was able to afford a $60,000 car so i want to enjoy it as much as possible so im going to do the minor bolt ons for my satisfaction haha. every car i have owned has been modded...much more than my vette. and im pretty confident in the LS3 engines. but if someone cant monetarily afford the risk of something happening then there's nothing wrong with leaving it stock until warranty is up

When fear has a grip on you while you have a warranty, it'll have a bigger grip when your warranty expires.

If that is the way you feel then why ask this question? It's your car and you don't need anyone's permission. If you have the money to spend and are independently wealthy then go for it. I am just stating the obvious to make sure you and others understand the risks. Let us know how you make out with the power gains. Ya see I just bought mine an 08 (not independently wealthy) and after my 12 month 12,000 warranty runs out I will jump on the Mod wagon also.

that's a good point. i never buy cars and leave them stock...i always have to make them my own

Garye, if you've already got the diablo sports tune done to your ECM, then look past the 5/yr powetrain warranty at this point, & I'd 100% reccomend the mods you listed..the headers & a re-tune at least, if indeed that's the sound you want.
I've dug into this pretty extensively & the LS3 drivetrain seems pretty bulletproof. Go to the ZipCorvette website & read Justin Abbot's article on tuning the LS3..you'll enjoy it. I've consistently read on CF @ guys getting 30-40 hp/tq from headers & a tune...pretty amazing.
