Default LS3 C6 makes 527 rwhp!

After months of research I finally pulled the trigger on doing a cam swap. Plans for the car were an occasional drap strip visit, but mostly street driven/DD so I didn't want a car that would barely run. I contacted MANY vendors(most if not all on this forum) as to what they would suggest. I turned to Vengeance Racing for there 'stage 3' cam package that really interested me. The package included everything you needed to do the job properly.

I went ahead and installed new lifters (LS9) as I had the resources to remove the heads while I was in there anyways. A coworker who has been in the porting business for many years took my heads on as a challenge. He noticed right away that the runner didn't need much work, if any. The rough casting would be smoothed, but no excess material required removal. I also spoke with Cajun @ Bare Essentials Racing for a ported TB, and intake manifold. Mod list is as follows:

VR Katoik camshaft - 235/243 620/623 113 LSA
VR Dual Springs
Hardened Pushrods - 7.400
MELLING High Volume Oil Pump
KATECH C5R Chain
COMP Trunion Kit
ARP Cam Bolts
LS7 Timing Gear
LS9 Lifters
LS9 Spark Plugs
Ported Heads
OBX 1 7/8" headers
Catless Mids
Corsa Sports
BER Ported TB
BER Ported Intake Manifold
Dyno Tune by Walls Rod & Custom. Tuned to 12:1 with 91 octane. Redline set to 7000.

The graph printed wasn't the car's best run, but was very close ~ 2 hp. Our best run, the car made 527 rwhp and 436 rwtq. What an animal! Big thanks to Kevin and Ryan at Vengeance Racing for all their help! As well as Cajun at BER for his assistance as well. Top notch vendors.

Idle clip(car was cold and literally was running on fumes so I just did a quick light rev):

Torque seems awfully low. Is that a typo?

Justin, I spoke with VR and their projected tq with this cam was in the 430-440 range, so they said its not low. As well, the project hp with this cam is around 480, thats where they were surprised. I figured the torque didnt go up exponentially due to the ported items as well as the 1 7/8 primaries instead of the 1 3/4... maybe? maybe not? If I had the money and time I'd love to do some comparison runs with different bolt ons.

Your mods are very similar to mine and while I don't have the same HP peak, my torque is quite a bit higher. I wonder if the higher lift on the cam is responsible. Either way, congrats on some awesome power Any track plans for it?

Thanks guys. Justin, we could've made more, but my tuner said with only 91 octane available we had to keep it at 12:1. I plan to go to the track later this summer, maybe areound august. Hoping for a 10 with a nice launch!

With that much power on tap, you should be in the 10s with relative ease, depending on weather conditions. Good luck

I too am a little surprised by the 90hp/torque spread with those cam specs and compression ratio, regardless nice combo and numbers...looking forward to seeing it go 10s!

Perhaps the difference lies in the tune - and more conservative timing tables and/or the A/F ratio?

Very Nice!! 12.1 is rich though for an N/A set up, you should be around 12.6-12.8. Looking forward to seeing some track #'s!

I spoke with a good friend of my tuner, who is out of town, and the car was tuned 12:1 as he said it was a safe ratio. Could he be wrong?

I personally think 12.1 is rich for an NA set up. Safe would be 12.4 to 12.6 but everyone has different opinions. The VR stage 3 is very similar to our Stage 3 and the power we usually see with stock heads and manifold are 480 RWHP and 440-450 RWTQ; with heads and a manifold we're at 510 RWHP and 450-460 RWTQ. You're RWHP numbers are excellent!

Kind regards,

Jordan Priestley

Nice build and rwp. I'm surprised by the tq, seems pretty low. Mine has similiar rwp, but the tq was significantly higher, although mid-range tq was the primary goal on mine.

Enjoy it, 500+ N/A hp is a fun thing.

A/F ratios arent inherently dangerous or safe. It depends on the rest of the tune. Timing curves and compression are what decides a safety level for a given fuel.

The guideline of 13:1 on a pump gas engine is altered when you have ethanol in the mix. 10% ethanol pump gas is going to make its greatest power closer to 12.3:1 because of the richer burn of the alcohol. Stoic for 10% ethanol pump gas is not 14.7:1 but rather 14.1:1 and explains why most tuners dont make any more power running leaner.

Meth injection on N/A cars make max power near 12:1 too.
