Default [Mufflers] What year did the Z06 npp because the same as the ZR1 npp?

I remember reading somewhere that the newer Z06s got the 'upgraded' ZR1 npp mufflers that already have the 'muffler mod' that was made popular by early model Z06s.

Can anyone confirm that in fact the newer Z06 and ZR1s share the same npp mufflers? What year did the Z06 get them?

Thanks in advance. Search returned nothing meaningful.

EDIT: autocorrect got me. Can a mod please change the title to "become the same as" thank you

2011 was the first year the Z06 got the new and improved exhaust...to include the ZR1 x-pipe and ZR1 styled mufflers. I understand that the Z06 muffler and the ZR1 muffler from 2011 do NOT share the same part number, but after driving a 2011 Z07 I can say they are every bit as loud as my ZR1 mufflers when the valves are open.

The issue begins in 2012, where the addition of two additional catalytic convertors were added to ALL models to apparently satisfy additional EPA requirements. This might cause an issue as the over axle piping MAY be of a different length to accomadate the different mid-pipe and new cat's location.

Read about the differences, and issues, here....

http://www.corvettenewsblog.com/2012...ic-converters/

Your best option would be to aquire a 2009-2011 ZR1 muffler assembly, which is a direct bolt on replacement for Z06's. To use it on other manual 6 speed models would require you to get the x-pipe (and possible the cats ?) as well, due to the difference in exhaust diameters (2.5" standard vs 3" for Z06/ZR1).

That's perfect. Thanks Victor. Exactly what I needed to know.

Now, do you know anyone selling ZR1 mufflers?

Several members claim they recently bought complete ZR1 exhausts from *bay for cheap. Other than that, just keep an eye on the sale section. I got my complete system (manifolds to mufflers) for $800 a year or two ago

Any opinions on swapping out my 2.5" x pipe and stock NPP for a full 3" and ZR1 mufflers to possibly gaining 5-7whp? The sound alone would be worth it, but any extra power I can squeeze out is icing on the cake.

will it bolt up to a 06 z06????

A VERY popular and worthwhile swap for LS2/LS3 cars.
If you don't already have headers (can't remember), Z06 exhaust manifolds will give you a boost as well, over OEM LS2/LS3 manifolds.

I think you'll get very positive feedback from the other's here that have gone this route to pickup extra power. How much power and torque...they'll need to say.

Thanks Victor-that's kind of what I figured. I have OBX 1 7/8" right now but it came with a 2.5" x-pipe. At the time, I was too excited about adding headers that I didn't realize it was a 2.5" xpipe. They do offer a 3" version though and that should mate up nicely with the ZR1 mufflers.

2009-2011 ZR1 exhaust are a direct bolt-on replacement for 2006-2010 Z06's. You'll only run into potential issues when you get to the newer 2012+ exhaust, because of the additional cats.

All OEM Z06/ZR1 exhaust are 3" from mid-pipe to muffler. Inside the muffler itself, I understand the internal piping diameter for both Z06 and ZR1 mufflers is 2.5"

Victor(or anyone else for that matter), is there any difference in the Z06 mufflers and the ZR1 other than the ZR1 having the muffler mod already done to it?

I may have come across a smoking deal on like-new Z06 mufflers and 3" h-pipe but I want to make sure they're essentially the same as the ZR1, sans the required welding.

Also, how much of a restriction do you think a factory H-pipe will be compared to an aftermarket X-pipe?

No, the 2006-2010 C6 Z06 mufflers are NOT the same as 2009-2011 ZR1 mufflers.

The only year C6 Z06 muffler that is comparable to the ZR1 muffler, and is a DIRECT bolt-on replacement, would be the 2011 C6 Z06 muffler.

In 2012, the mufflers are generally the same but the piping is going to be potentially different due to the extra cat's that have been added....see original pics back at the beginning of this thread.

2006-2010 C6 Z06 used a 3" H-pipe...2011 uses the ZR1's X-pipe.
2009-2011 ZR1 uses 3" X-pipe, but in 2012+, extra cat's were added which may not be a direct replacement for older Z06's (or ZR1's).

The benifit's of all this is the exhaust sound....there may be a small change in HP/TQ but nothing really big if any.

first thank you for the info.

sound is all i am going for right now. i just want it louder. but when i go down the road i love the ability to turn it down with the "man switch"

what my main question is is. on my 06z exhuast the pipe is 3 " but it drops down to 2.5" right before the muffler.

does the New z06 or Zr1 exhuast do this??? or is it straight 3" all the way through the muffler??

if the new stuff drops down to the 2.5" size then i will just do the muffler mod and cut it open. lol.

The ZR1 mufflers are perforated pipes on the quite side, and straight thru pipes on the loud side.

2006-2010 Z06 mufflers are straight pipe on the quite side, and perforated pipes on the loud side.

Unmodified 06-10 Z06 pipes are LOUDER on the quite side, and QUITER on the loud side than ZR1 mufflers. People modify the muffler's loud side perforated pipe to make them sound like how the ZR1 mufflers are from the factory.

What this means is that a stock ZR1 muffler will be MORE QUITER on the quiet side of the exhaust than a factory 06-10 Z06 muffler, but LOUDER on the open flapped "loud" side than a factory Z06 muffler.

A moddified Z06 muffler will be louder on closed flap operation, and equally as loud on open flap operation...as compared to a stock ZR1 muffler.

I'm not sure there's any really restrictions on either H or X pipe, but generally, the X-pipe moved the frequency of the exhaust tone up a bit and I seem to get a little less of throttle popping on decel.

Victor. You're the man. Thanks for the summary. That pretty much says it all right there. Where's the sticky on this?

Both OEM Z06 and ZR1 exhaust neck down to 2.5" right when entering the mufflers...and the internal muffler piping is 2.5" all the way out to their exit points, where they have their tips attached.

I'm sure it's stickied somewhere...probably in the Z06 section.

People are really suprised on how quiet my car is at idle and at cruise when the flaps are closed.....the ZR1 mufflers are really, REALLY quite.

But, when those flaps open at 3500 RPM (or opened via my M2W), my car is really loud at WOT......in excess of 98-99 db, and it startles a lot of people on how this happened

I really want the Z mufflers, if for no other reason than sound alone. I feel like the 2.5" x pipe could be a small restriction for my motor but I won't know without switching it out and doing the dyno pulls. I'm currently at 517/462 with the 2.5" and NPP

Well Justin, I know where your mufflers need to go.
