Replaced all 4 lift supports today
2006 C6 bought in April of 2006. Hood was not staying up all the time, so I bought all 4 lift supports from Amazon.
I bought:
Two StrongArm 6330 Chevrolet Corvette 2005-06 Hood Lift Support
Two StrongArm 6508 Chevrolet Corvette 2005-07 Hatch Lift Support
The total bill with free shipping and some kind of $10 promotion that I got and do not know why, was $76 for all 4 supports. It took me all of 30 minutes to replace them by myself. The trick is to use a piece of PVC pipe to hold up the hood and hatch while you replace them. It's not hard, just pry open the spring retainer to pop the old ones off and then just pop the new ones on after cleaning and re-greasing the *****.
I could tell immediately that both the hood and hatch are harder to close. I think the arizona heat shortens the life of lift support struts.

I bought the same hood supports a few weeks ago since mine had been not working for a few months now. I had forgotten how nice it is to not have to prop the hood open with a piece of pvc.

You may be correct about the Arizona heat, but then again, it's pretty darn hot under the hood for everyone regardless of local
Thanks for the post regarding part numbers and cost !!!

The hood struts on our 2006 died at a little over a year, 20k miles.
The trunk struts on our 2009 died at a little over 2 years, 30k miles.
Gotta love that great GM quality.

Just did mine with gm units from parts taxi. I agree its very nice to be able to open the hood without worrying about it knocking you in the head.
btw strongarm and mighty lift are both made by the same company but one gets sold through autozone and hte otehr through advance auto parts
here is the manufacturer website (includes a parts finder with dimensionsand part numbers)

By the way, the stock GM units are Sachs Stabilus units. You can buy these (but they weren't in stock) from O'Reilly/Checkers Auto Parts.
But it's been a few days and I still can't believe how much force it takes to close the hood and hatch now. So the Amazon Strongarm units work great and they are pretty inexpensive when you consider no sales tax and no shipping.

Good God man, another part to inevitabely purchase/replace.
Good thing you didn't go to Chevy directly because they may requre you to purhcase the hood in order to get the lift supports.
Sounds like it's a quick and easy fix.

Good deal. I just bought the hood lift supports alone on ebay after I got a good bonk on the noggin. I paid about what you did for all four! I need to brush up on my interwebz deal finding.

I used a pair of channel locks on my hood supports on my Grand National for 10 years out at the track til on day a guy stopped by and called me a cheap ***, turns out they listed for around $7 each, never had to carry Channel locks again

glennhl: Do you know if those hood supports will fit a 2007? They're listed as up to '06, but i see no reason why they wouldn't work unless GM changed something. Thanks!
