Default LS2, G5X3-114 lsa, AFR 205 heads 59 cc. Flycut or not?

My friend has offered me a deal I cannot refuse on a set of AFR 205 heads with new springs, cut to 59cc chambers.

My cam is the G5x3 on a 114 lsa.

Anyone know if I'll need to flycut with these heads?

Can I use a .040 Cometic gasket with these heads?

Appreciate any experience and advice.

Don't know for sure. But if you're getting a good deal do whatever it takes to run them; you'll get so much more seat of the pants oomff with those heads it will feel like you gained some cubes.

Joe,
I guess that 10.99 ET wasn't good enough. You won't be bragging about that stock clutch too much longer after those heads are on.

Joe: Could that good friend be Steve? I think it's going to be close with a .040 Cometic gasket.

With the AFR's and that cam....no you do not. A stock head, yes you would.

With the changed valve location in the AFR head you should be just fine without cutting.

If you want to be sure PM or call me with a valve drop measurement with the head on and the piston at TDC and we can double check.

Thanks Anthony for chiming in. Your cam has been a great performer in my daily driver for years now. Very happy with it.

I will call you with the drop info, thanks for the support.

I would like to run .040 Cometic gaskets for a bit more compression, do you think that will fit with no flycut?

It will fit, even with those gaskets.

Perfect!! Thanks for the advice.

I'll double check to be sure...but I'm glad to know I don't need to rent a cutting rig unnecessarily.

I think LG said the G5X3 with the 112 is the max that fits with stock heads so the difference from the 114 is about .012" so if they are milled more than that, you need to cut.

Bolted them on today. Called Anthony, @ LG, they told me .180 at TDC is minimum spec with my cam.... told them I'm at at .195 so I should be good to go. Ended up going with .045 gaskets as Cometic is two weeks out for the .040's and I didn't want to reuse mine.

Will get it fired up tomorrow. Had to break on my car and get my friend's car running with my heads. He's running perfectly.

Man that power steering bracket is a BI&CH. OMG does it s*ck.

I wonder if there's a better way to do it. Getting the reservoir out of the bracket stinks, and those lower bolts turn about 15 degrees before hitting something.

Must be a better way....any tips?

I don't think there is a way to get around those PS reservoir and pump bolts. I did read, however, on a DIY cam install thread from JayplaySS that he used a dremmel to cut out the bottom of the bolt holes on some of the reservoir bracket holes. That way you could simply loosen the bolt a turn or two and slide the reservoir and bracket (together) up and out of the way. That is a great idea, and I will definately be doing this if I ever have to go back into the motor.

I know when I did mine I could not believe what a pain it was to get back together. I definitely would cut the bracket as you mentiond if I had it apart again.

Have you had any time to do any tuning?

Once you have it dialed in I bet that car's going to be making some pretty sweet power in the neighborhood of 485 or so. Should be a pretty nasty car from any speed.

So....what clutch are you going with?

A heads & cam manual trans C6, car should be a total blast (not that it wasn't already), especially on the highway.

Well the car purrs like a kitten. Took a degree of timing out all over to account for the increased compression (from 11.4 to 11.9) and it runs great. Ltft's are -1, just like before. I see street traction has become an issue. Nice midrange pickup. I'll have to get it to the dyno and the strip to see what difference the heads make.

My friend Hakan from Sweden asked for a video of the high compression ls2...he has the twin of my car except he has a blower, no big cams allowed in Sweden.

Here you go buddy.

My orig tune is running great, have to get it to the strip to test wot...

Stock clutch of course!. It's been my faithful servant for 435 passes and 55000 daily driving miles! We will have to see how it goes.

Remember, my 4.10 gears and 2.97 first gear help my clutch live.

It was nice stopping by and seeing the "Spark Doc" and his co-LsX surgeon "S" at work.
Buick stg1 Mike and I really enjoyed it.

Looking forward to viewing consistant 10's with your no adder go to work car now, and in the heat also...

Your operating room is nice and clean, and that "flypaper" picking up the missing bolt that was trying to escape must have made you really happy as well!

btw, cool "mote" you have at your crib too!
