Default Shifter wont go in 1st or 2nd.

Just got a new shifter about 2 months ago, not it wont go into 1st or 2nd.
Anyone had this problem before? does anyone have a install guild on how to install and adjust a shifter? I had a shop install it when my transmission was rebuilt.

Its a B&M shifter.

Try this:
B&M Shifter Installation Guide

Sounds like it may not be aligned correctly or the shifter box is moving around. With the transmission in neutral, loosen the 2 large torx bolts to the torque tube mounting on the right. Move the whole box front to back until while inserting the alignment pin into the hold on the nose of the shifter box. That will lock the shifter into the neutral position. Then tighten the torx bolts. There is no adjustment for the single big torx bolt between the shifter box shaft and transmission shaft.

If you remove the shifter box, look carefully at the rubber bushings between the box and the torque tube mount. These can break down and fall apart. GM does not sell these bushings. If you need new bushings, let me know.

Still no luck.
Could this be a shift fork or a blocker ring or something? I just had the transmission rebuilt and the shifter installed.

Right before this happen, it was tough to move the shifter around and i had difficulty getting it in other gears. Then it started moving freely but it wouldnt go into to first or 2nd.

It sure sounds to me like the connection between the shifter shaft and the shifter box shaft is slipping. Make sure this bolt is tight.

If that doesn't fix it then I have no idea.

Its tight, but the whole shifter moves. Could that be the linkage?

You need to define "whole shifter".

If that bolt is truly tight (and I do mean *tight*) then, given that you said you recently rebuilt the tranny, that's where I think you have to look. I'd sure want to fiddle with the shifter some more first, though.

If it's the shifter, failing to get into the "far reaches" (1&2 or 5&6 or reverse) usually means that the way the shifter is attached to the shifter rod isn't allowing enough rotation in the needed direction. And if the thing was working before and now isn't, that suggests the rod is slipping. I'd fiddle with that bit some (costs nothing) before I went at the tranny (costs much.) On the other hand, the guys who did the transmission (assuming they know what they are doing) may be able to diagnose this better that we can over the net.

The shift box is mounted to the TORQUE TUBE. Its mounted on Two rubber bushings on the top and one large rubber mount on the bottom. If the bushings are bad,, and the shift box moves easily,, seethis post for the FIX!

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-t...ed-owners.html

Its a two page post and the last page, last few post ZIP Products have replacement poly bushings!

If the shifter TOP is not properly tight (four fasteners) it will shift poorly also. Make sure that the top is tight on the shift box.

Heres what it looks like seperated:

The picture is a C5 ZO6 shifter/box. Those cars had solid aluminum bushings vise the rubber bushings.

Here is a photo of the shifter box.

The bushings are the black things under the oval stand off.

View from top.

View from bottom

Always check the condition of the rubber bushings when working on the alignment or installing a new shifter. If shifter box seems loose, or pieces missing, then get new bushings.

Better aftermarket bushings are now available from various vendors but not GM.

Its a heavy metal relay rod that connected to the box with a bolt/clinch fitting:

Make sure that your box is properly adjusted to the neutral position.

GREAT intellectual capital folks. Thank you!

Hope my CGW comes soon (Backordered late June / early July) for my LS2 / T56 AND HOPE it helps 06 Z51 Vert Shifting (cough!).... (23K Miles)

I wonder if I will receive new bushings with it? Also wonder if it will eliminate the 1-4 skipper?

Any Feedback?

Should anything in the above posts have Light Lubricant on them; if so what is preferred???????

Great thread... I was freaking out... I thought I messed up my synchro or something cause I could not shift into second gear. Turns out that adjusting the linkage rod fixed my problem. I used an allen key to stick in the hole in the front of the shifter and tightened the linkage torx bolt very, very tight. Overall I would say it was an adjustment of a couple millimeters but man, did it make a HUGE difference!!! Thank you to everyone who posted on here! It was a BIG, BIG help!!!

Quick Reply: Shifter wont go in 1st or 2nd.
