Gm performance parts releases ls9 supercharger kit
“Enthusiasts have been asking about this exciting performance component since the Corvette ZR1 debuted, and GM Performance Parts is thrilled to finally offer it,” said Dr. Jamie Meyer, product integration manager for GM Performance Parts. “Our LSX376 crate engine was developed specifically for forced induction, so the LS9 supercharger kit complements it perfectly to create a robust and very powerful engine for street rods, resto-mod muscle cars and late-model performance vehicles.”
GMPP’s LS9 supercharger kit (part number 19244103) includes the assembled supercharger, fuel rail with injectors, integrated throttle body and “dual brick” intercooler. The builder must supply the engine’s LS9’s front drive accessories and drive belt – available as a kit from GMPP (part number 19243524) – and other intercooler plumbing components. The supercharger is not compatible with LS1, LS2, LS6 or LS7 heads, and hood modifications may be required with C5, C6 and some other vehicles.
The LSX376 crate engine (part number 19171049) is suited to the supercharger, with a tough rotating assembly – including lower, 9.0:1-compression pistons – and LS3 cylinder heads. However, special installation steps and additional parts are required when using the supercharger with the LSX376 and other engines. They include:
• Some engines may require a custom harmonic balancer/damper to accommodate the wider LS9 accessory drive system
• LS9 valve covers must be used on all engines incorporating the LS9 front accessory drive system, in order to provide adequate clearance for the alternator and other accessories
• On engines using a conventional, wet-sump oiling system, the non-removable oil cap on the LS9 valve covers must be replaced with an LSA removable cap
• The LS9 breather tube that links the supercharger to the valley cover plate must be used.
• A custom wiring harness and engine controller must be obtained.
When using the LSX376, an oil pan, oil pickup tube, oil dipstick and ignition coils are required to complete the engine assembly.
TVS technology
On the production LS9 6.2L supercharged engine, the supercharger generates about 10.5 pounds of boost and spins to a maximum of about 15,000 rpm, helping it produce 638 horsepower. The supercharger’s effectiveness is due to its advanced, four-lobe and high-helix (twist angle) design. It was developed by Eaton to support the performance parameters set by Chevrolet during the development of the Corvette ZR1. They included greater low-end torque and more horsepower at high rpm – areas where positive-displacement superchargers were known to be deficient.
The four-lobe rotor design (most other superchargers use three-lobe rotors) helped produce the low-rpm performance, while the supercharger’s large, 2.3L displacement ensures adequate airflow at high rpm, for sustained horsepower across the rpm band. It is also an extremely quiet supercharger, matching exceptional performance with refinement.
Because of its high-boost capability, GMPP recommends premium engine fasteners and head gaskets with the LS9 supercharger. It is sold as a racing part only by GM Performance Parts and does not carry a warranty. Installation on a late-model Camaro or Corvette will void the vehicles’ GM warranty.
About GM Performance Parts
GM Performance Parts (GMPP) fuels the passions of automotive enthusiasts with factory-engineered and fully assembled crate engines, engine parts and vehicle accessories, including specialized licensed parts and accessories. GM Performance Parts is the only source for brand-new classic small-block and big-block crate engines, which use all-new parts, including the cylinder block, rotating assembly and cylinder heads. GMPP is also the leader in “LS” performance, with a full range of production-based crate engines and the growing family of LSX maximum performance engines and parts. GMPP’s LS-based E-ROD engine systems include emissions equipment that meets California requirements for pre-OBD-II vehicles (E-ROD LS3 systems carry CARB EO D-126-30), delivering high performance with low emissions. No other manufacturer offers a comparable system. Customers can view information and purchase engines and parts at gmperformanceparts.com.

But don't forget the additional $5,000-$6,000 needed to get the additional parts needed from GM to install the unit, and then another $2,000 for a high rise hood. And it will require a custom tune.
For $7,000, you get a complete, turn key unit from Edelbrock that incluses a hand held tune, and you don't need an aftermarket hood.
