Default If you thought LS3 and LS7 air filters were the same... (PICS)

I thought this was interesting... I have an 08 LS3 air filter and an 07 LS7 air filter. When i put them side by side, i noticed the LS3 filter has more aerodynamic fins in the front. also when i hold both up to the light, i can see more light pasing thru the LS3 filter and hardly any at all thru the LS7 filter. when you look at both filters directly from the face, it looks like a wall of glue on the LS7 filter. I'm thinking the donaldson powercore filter was revised for 08. it looks like it will flow alot better! LS7 filter on the left. MarkRx tested, kitty approved!

all the more reason to not buy an intake for the ls3. Waste of money IMO.

I'm not sure I understand where the air enters. Through the section facing up in the pics or the sides? I haven't seen one off the car. If it flows from the top section on the pic how in the hell does it filter?

Default LS9 Filter

Anyone have stats or pics of the LS9 powercore filter? I read somewhere that it is the same size, but is supposed to flow more.

Here are a few photos of my LS9 filter. I took these photos before I saw this thread, otherwise I would have taken a close up shot of the filter itself. However, my LS9 filter is exactly like the LS7 filter. It has a lot of glue in it. The only place it draws air from is two cutouts on either side of the filter housing at the bottom. That's it. No fresh air from outside.

Thanks for the pics! How the hell does it actually filter? It looks like corrugated cardboard from the side??? Isn't there a direct path right from one side of the filter to the other? Maybe I'm being dense, but I haven't seen a filter like these before. I'm just see cone and panel filters all the time and the operation of those is pretty simple.

These filters flow extremely well interesting find between the LS3/LS7. On the dyno, I gained zero from the upgrade to the Vararam. Of course when the car is moving, that is not the case.

I don't know if the ZR1 is the same as the Z06, but the small duct on the nose of the car is a baffled opening into the air box compartment. If you shine a light on it from the outside, you should see some light coming through.
Jim Hall did some testing the the Z06 AIS filter system when they first came out and posted a lot of good info on the new filters:
The stock Donaldson PowerCore filter is no more restrictive than a filter 3 times its size. It has nanofiber filtration technology that has 20+ patents pending, and is by far the best filter ever made for the Corvette. It NEVER needs replacing, and outflows even our Stinger SSM, which has 260 sq. inches of filter media.
Part of the reason it works so well is the straight-through design which helps to create smoother flow to the Hitachi Mass Airflow sensor.

Interesting comparison on the filters, thanks for sharing.

Is that cat some sort of Cornish Rex mix?

The air moves in one layer and is filtered by directed up, and through the next layer - since there are multiple layers this "up and through" pattern is repeated until exiting the filter media into the air chamber...

The ZR1 is completely closed off up front there is no opening for air to come through. You can see this in my photographs

The strange thing about it is that they use the same part number.
Currently I'm running the LS7 filter in my 08. In my opinion it flows better than the LS3 (It looks the same as your photo too).
Just take the two and blow into them and you'll notice that the LS7 is less restrictive than the LS3 (at least in my case).
The LS7 seems to have the same amount of flow across the whole filter while the LS3 flows well on the ends and is more restrictive in the middle.

By the way the part number of my stock LS3 filter is P605801 NOV 07C P. I don't remember the part number of the LS7 filter... its in the car right now.

Devon Rex... her name is peaches and she loves to play fetch these cats have awesome personalities

I blew into both filters. for me it seemed the air entered easier on the LS3 filter. th ls7 filter was like a wall of glue. Who knows when it's actualy inserted into the housing and air is sucked thru it from the other side. I emailed the donaldson company, when i get a reply i'll post it.

I believe some Donaldson info posted by Halltech some time ago indicates the Powercore which is used in the ZR1 has a 19% better airlow than the LS7 filter and thus the LS3 filter.

Please indulge me:

Is the LS3 aircleaner a drop-in replacement in a C6 with the LS2 engine?

Thanx in advance .

no, completely different airboxes...

I have a PDF file from donaldson to haltech comparing the stock c6(ls2), z06, and haltech filter. the z06 system was the best (also found in the 08 LS3)

I still want to know why donaldson has 2 or 3 different air filters for the ls3/z06/zr1. they all seem interchangable but wondering if they are designe different for a reason other than mere flow.
