Default '08+ manual trans and first gear

Is it true that for the 2008 and up Vettes that you never have a problem getting the car to go into first gear? In my '01, the stick often balks at going into first and then I have to put it in the third before it will slide into first.

This problem was a characteristic of the T56 trans., the t6060 trans was supposed to address this and other issues. I have read however that the new trans has its own set of quirks. Some who have owned both didn't see much of a difference between the two. [ not sure if I got those trans #'s right.]

Those "some" would have to be numb not to notice the difference. The original trans (05 to 07) was frequently problematic going into first gear after sitting in neutral at a light. If it wouldn't go in, the best method was to go back to neutral, let the clutch out and try again. Not the quickest way to get moving. And the throw of the shifter was too long.

That was all fixed in the 08 - 09 trans. Never a problem going into first and a short shifter replaced the previous one. The only problem with the new trans is that it doesn't like to go into second when cold. I just shift from first to third until the trans warms up and that's not an issue.

Default Ist Gear

Hello all,

35 years ago, I got into the habit of always shifting into second gear before shifting into first, with any car that has a manual tranny. This has become habit for me and I don't notice that I am doing it any more.

Give it a try, especially after being in reverse, like when backing out of your driveway. After you have backed out, depress the clutch, shift from reverse into second and then into first. No need to release the clutch when you go into neutral.

If you you do release the clutch while in neutral and then depress it to shift into second and then straight into frst gear, even better.

I got into the habit of always shifting into second gear before shifting into first,

Doesn't do any good on the 05 to 07 transmission.

My '08 has never given me any issues going into first, but I must say my '04 (T56) hasn't, either. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I can count on only a finger or two the number of times when I had trouble going to first (and come to think of it, it was only when the car was stopped -- that's only an issue of synchos not lining up in a static tranny, not a on-the road shifting problem).

Maybe my 06 is unusual, but I never have a problem getting into 1st. Could also be because mine is the Z-51 manual (MZ 6) with lower ratios in 1st and 2nd compared to the standard 6sp (MN 6).

Is there a "fix" to the shifter not wanting to go in? (Besides going into neutral)

i have had no problems going into 1st gear with my 08 either. however 1st to 2nd and even 2nd to 3rd can be a little stiff when cold. i do sometimes have a little trouble getting into reverse from nuetral. however letting the clutch out just a little bit helps it slide right in..
