How do you use the OBD II scanner on a C6??
Guys maybe you can help me out here. My CEL just turned on so I went to Autozone to borrow an OBD II scanner. The funny thing is that It scanned it for a few seconds but I got a "Reading Error" mssg. So I re-scanned it for 3X and still I was getting the same mssg. So I tested it on my 2002 Dodge Caravan and it worked just fine and gave me an " OK, (no code)" mssg. So what the heck is wrong here. This loaner scanner worked on my Van but not on the C6. And yes I did all of the required steps from the manual.. What am I doing wrong here??? Any help would be appreciated.

The C6 uses CAN (Controller Area Network) (which GM calls GMLAN) communications rather than the SAE PWM communications (which GM calls Class 2) at the OBD-II port. So you need a scanner that handles CAN. The AutoXray 4000 does, I know some other units that do but don't have a list handy. CAN is being phased in as the standard to replace the old mess of 4 or 5 different "standards", I think its required for 2008 but GM is getting started early with the newer models.

Thank you.. Yes you're right. I called the customer support tech for the scanner and I need a OBD II with a CAN network. This loaner tool doenst have the CAN communication. Thanks again.

I've heard mention (on this forum) of an under $100 code reader available at WalMart that'll do CAN - can't seem to find it by searching, but that's a thought. I PM'd you about another one.

Thanks everyone. I got me a scanner from the net and hope the CEL is nothing serious. And NO I will not drive the Van waiting around for my scanner to arrive.

GMLAN is actually a combination of things. GM's version of CAN and ISO14229 Diagnostics.
I do reverse engineering as well as pull codes, DIDs, etc... and I use tools from Intrepid Controls here:
http://intrepidcs.com/
Specifically, I used their ValueCAN and Vechicle Spy software and recently upgraded to their NEO-VI Fire tool.
Keep in mind that there are more and more CAN channels on vehicles these days. Ford, I know has at least two CAN channels they call MS-CAN and HS-CAN which are just two different baud rates for the same ISO15765 (CAN) protocol.

What cell phone do you have,
If you have an apple, then pick up a wifi low profile Elm327.
If droid, then pick up a blue tooth low profile elm327
Note, both at about $10 each and you want the low profile model so you not hitting your knee off it as your driving the car and it plugged into the port.
Depending on the phone, your going to run either dash commander, or torque for real time read outs and pulling/clearing codes, while on your laptop, your going to run Scan master (should come with the device elm device) to get more information on the motor instead (read check if you have a lazy O2 sensor and such as you are monitoring the engine real time).
If you need to start pulling codes from the Body and ABS module, then you really need to pick up a Clone tech II as well.
