Default Just learning how to tune. Need suggestions.

Hi everyone and Merry Christmas BTW.

I'm getting ready to buy a HP Tuner and start playing with my car. Are there any threads or write-ups that would be helpful to someone like me who is just starting out?

I'm currently just reading through all the CF threads but i would like all the info i can possibly get when it comes to tuning.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Go register on the HP Tuners forum. Plenty of help and tutorials.

I can recommend 2 books

One from Greg Banish who posts on the HPTuners forum under the ID "eficalibrator". The name of the book is "Engine Management: Advanced Tuning" available at Amazon. Greg teaches classes and does OEM EFI tuning. This book is more theory based than practical hands on tuning.

The other has just been released from Dan Maslic and is available at:
http://www.masportspeedshop.com/serv...-tuning/Detail

Dan Maslic is a vendor on ls1tech.com and his ID there is "dan@masportspeedshop"

Dan's book is more technical and gives examples using HPTuners.

I found both books useful in getting the full picture which can be difficult from just reading different postings on forums.

Have you bought a wide band yet?

The first thing I would do if I were you is read up on how your PCM works. That sounds kind of vague... but what I mean is you need to develop an understanding of what everything means, how data is used, and where things come from. Understanding airflow from your MAF and your VE will help, as well as understanding the different ways to look at engine load (air flow vs. cylinder air mass).

The HPTuners forum will ultimately coach you through it. One suggestion though... change only one thing at a time until you have some practice. That way, you can better understand what effects the various parameters have on engine operation.

No, i haven't bought a wide band yet. I am getting the pro version so that i can plug one in though.

Those seem like some good books and i'll look into getting them.

Thanks

Yeah you have a point there. I really don't understand how a lot of the electronics on the car work or read data.

Is there a book or DVD that explains how electronics such as MAF, MAP, etc all read data and come together?

Thanks

If you havent bought HP Tuners yet, give EFI Live some consideration.

Ben Strader offers classes at EFI University on this very thing. You can see the University at EFI Lives website under Training link.
