Default Who built your boosted motor?

Howdy,

Hope some of you could share your opinions please and provide some feedback as im fairly new to this...

What vendor/shop did build your motor? Is one better off buying block and heads separate?

Has anyone gone with an LSx block over LS to keep the cost down?(I know LSx weighs more) but im debating a rear mount turbo setup so that might offset the weight evenly.

ERL and RHS my best bets for blocks?

Thx

What do you want to make? How much power? Size of motor? Etc.

Livernois did my motor. LME does great motors too. Can't answer the buying block and heads separate. That is up to you if you want to pay a shop to bolt heads on. That part to me is easy so I just got a short block. That being said there is a lot more than bolting on the heads to a short block. Windage tray, timing setup, oil pan, cam, lifters, pushrods, cam, etc.

ERL makes great blocks, especially if you have a core. Paying for a core can add a lot to the price. The only reason I didn't do an ERL block is trying to find a good core and without one the cost was $1500 more than an LSX block. LSX block isn't cheap, and will cost more than a stock LS block.

You have a lot of choices
LSX block
LS2
LS3
LS7
ERL sleeved aluminum block
Darton Sleeved blocks
RHS
LSNext
Warhawk

It all depends on what you want. I would probably just do a nice forged 402/408 aluminum stock block ls2/3 for 800-900rwhp and be happy.

LME built mine. So far so good. Lots of dyno pulls and street tuning but no real miles yet.

Just to clarify, lsx is an actual gm 6 bolt block. If you mean ly6, lq9, ect stock gm iron blocks.

Schwanke built my ly6 shortblock with stock crank, eagle rods, wiseco pistons. I assembled the rest (cam, oil pump, heads, ect)

^^Some good points. Power goals are all over for now, 800 to 900 is goal for NOW, something similar to link below
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-f...unt-c5z06.html

Dan's car is pushing mid 800 on pump with Precision 7175 and he went with good ol' 5.3

I'd be using the same shop to build me the rear mount just going with a bigger turbo.

Second option is 8 rib F1A and see what that makes.

Main concern is what does one do when 800whp isnt enough? I'd want a block that can handle north of 1000whp

BTW, i just recently found a buyer for my Stock block LS7 which at that point i decided to sell complete H/C motor and go with a new one all together.

Then do an ERL or LSX block, but don't cheap out on the internals. Do a dragonslayer and decent pistons/rods IMO.

Then again I know 3 locals making 1000-1200rwhp on forged ls3s. No sleeves, just good pistons/rods in a stock ls3 block.

My block is LSX 427, 4.125x4
Dragonslayer crank
Calles Billet Ultra Rods
Livernois Coated Pistons
Coated bearings, ARP mains, etc

Friend just got a 416 LME motor for a TT camaro
Dragon slayer crank
Calles Billet Ultra Rods
Wiesco Coated gas ported pistons
Coated bearings/etc

My motor was $8500, his was ~$8000 or so. That is just short blocks assembled.

When I priced out motors they were all within $100-200 of each other besides Katech that was 2x anyone else.

Honestly, I would get a quote and lead time from LME, HKE, and Livernois and see who can meet your needs. I waited 9 months for a motor so depending on what you want the delivery time may choose who you want to use.

Plan is to make some calls tomorrow and get some quotes. Lead time at this point doesnt matter, i kinda need time away from cars.

I was going to start with Randy @ Ragin Racin and guys @ VR and go from there.

I overspent on the motor. In all honesty I have more motor than the rest of my car will support.... My car has been a learning experience for sure. I wanted a motor that would hold up and give me 1000 hp and I certainly believe that I have that. Now I have to look at heads and a transmission swap down the road. Hopefully a long ways down the road. Good luck to you on your build.

I also dealt with Bryan at LME for my short block. Service was excellent and so far the motor has been flawless. It took about 10 weeks to get done, and that was including Christmas holidays, which slowed things a bit.

The description above is identical to mine. The short block and oil pump, including shipping up here to Canada, was just under 7000.00

After the experience I had with LME, I personally wouldn't shop anywhere else if I need a motor again.
